How does the spell Remove Curse interact with a Sword of Vengeance?

One of my players recently acquired, and become attuned to, a cursed Sword of Vengeance (DMG, p. 206).

The descriptive text for this item says:

This sword is cursed and possessed by a vengeful spirit. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you.

And also:

You can break the curse in the usual ways [...] The sword then becomes a +1 weapon with no other properties.

One of the other PCs in my game is a Cleric, capable of casting the spell Remove Curse, which says:

At your touch, all curses affecting one creature or object end. If the object is a cursed magic item, its curse remains, but the spell breaks its owner’s attunement to the object so it can be removed or discarded.

The item text says that the curse can be broken 'in the usual ways', but the Remove Curse spell text says that it will only break a creature's attunement to a cursed item, not remove a curse from the item itself.

Does this mean that:

  1. The spell Remove Curse is not able to remove the curse from this Sword of Vengeance, only free unlucky PCs from its clutches?
  2. The curse can be removed if Remove Curse is cast twice? The first casting to break attunement and remove the curse from the PC, then a second casting to remove the curse from the weapon itself (while no one is attuned to it)?
  3. Or something else?

UPDATE: For anyone interested in how I ended up deciding to resolve this - the answer, as so often happens, is that the narrative took a surprising turn and the curse was sort of 'broken' by other means.

The PC in posession of the cursed sword was killed in combat. It had been previously established that the vengeful spirit possessing the sword was diabolical (as opposed to demonic) in nature and so when the PC died the devil's master appeared and offered the PC a dark pact in exchange for resurrection. When the PC woke up the curse had been broken and, by the player's choice they'd multiclassed into Warlock (Fiendish patron).

Sword of Vengeance

Aura moderate evocation [good]; CL 9th; Slot none; Price 32,350 gp; Weight 8 lbs.

DESCRIPTION

It is said that divine soldiers wield these golden +1 holy greatswords in their battles against fiends and other evil creatures. Once per day upon successfully striking an evil-aligned creature with a sword of vengeance, the wielder can cause the sword to emit a 20-foot-radius burst of holy energy. This effect is identical to that of a holy smite spell centered on the creature struck, and deals 4d8 points of damage to each evil creature in the area (or 9d6 points of damage to evil outsiders) and causes each to become blinded for 1 round. A successful DC 16 Will save halves the damage and negates the blinded effect. Neutral creatures in the area only take half damage (reduced to one-quarter on a successful save) and are not blinded.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

FeatsCraft Magic Arms and Armor; Spellsholy smite; Special creator must be good; Gold 16,350 gp

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Sword of Vengeance (3.5e Equipment)

Sword.gif

Sword of Vengeance[edit]

The Sword of Vengeance is an artifact in the Twelve Swords campaign setting.

This sword (like the other eleven) has a generic metallic colored blade and a black hilt. There is a small white symbol (See Symbol below) etched in on side of the black hilt. The sword is unbreakable, and it will retain an extremely keen edge no matter what it cuts or is struck against, and always gleams with a faint white tinge.

Symbol: concentric circles (bullseye)

This sword acts as a +5 Longsword as well as has the below ability.

Once per day, the wielder can activate the Sword of Vengeance as a full round action. Upon will, the wielder releases the sword, and then the sword disappears. It reappears by the desired enemy and pierces its heart, killing it instantly. The wielder must be able to see and recognize his target. A Will save can be made to resist the swords ability (DC 20) This ability cannot affect anyone who possesses one of the other Twelve Swords. The sword lies in the enemies’ heart, until someone draws it out.

Vengeance is Mine (5e Equipment)

Weapon (longsword), Legendary (Requires Attunement by Chaotic Alignment)

Born from the seething hatred of a scorned knight, this blade seems to rage on even in the absence of its creator. The dark, jagged edge of its onxy blade was made to hurt as each hooked fang was used to maim, not kill. The face of the blade is inscribed with what seems to be an array of runes, or perhaps a language that when transcribed, translates to: "Seek me, if thy hatred is brighter than the sun, if thy need for vengeance is stronger than the will to live. I am the key and you, the lock." The warped and twisted hilt of this dark blade is made of an almost charred-looking material that's shaped into a set of horns that hook upwards and out whilst the handle is made of a rich gray wood wrapped in leather. The pommel of this longsword looks to be a face twisted into a snarl.

This Longsword has a +2 to all attacks and damage rolls. On a successful hit, Vengeance is Mine deals an additional damage die to enemies. Due to the nature of this weapon, Vengeance is mine is magical for the purposes of ignoring resistances. This blade has 8 charges which it can expend and replenishes 1d6+2 charges daily at dawn. When paired with Nemesis, the +2 becomes a +3.

The one who is scorned: Once a day, the wielder of Vengeance is Mine may declare an enemy as a "Target of Vengeance" for 2 charges. The wielder can change targets once every dawn for 2 charges, but should they seek only one individual they gain these benefits:

  • You gain knowledge on the general direction of your "Target of Vengeance" is in, although it does not determine how far the target is away from you, nor does it give you an indication if you're close to the target -- just the direction they are in.
  • You deal an extra 2d6 Necrotic damage to your "Target of Vengeance" as the seething hatred covets their flesh.
  • You gain Advantage on Intimidation rolls against your "Target of Vengeance"

What is owed is always paid: You gain a "Vengeance Pool" equal to 5xPlayer Level. Any time you take damage, half of the damage taken will fuel the sword's pool of vengeance and on a successful attack, you may expend as many points as you like, dealing additional necrotic damage.

Spells: The blade's pain gives life to spells, allowing you to cast: vampiric touch(2 charge), blight(3 Charges), find steed(3 charges), and finger of death(5 Charges). Any spell may be cast at a higher level for an additional charge.

Fickle Obsession - Cursed: This weapon is cursed. Attuning to it curses you until you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic. Releasing the weapon fails to end the curse on you. Once you are attuned to the Vengeance is Mine, you become subtly addicted to its use, and feel a need to be in proximity to it.

  • If you attempt to move away from the weapon, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, or be unable to overcome the mad desire to be near it. You must complete a long rest before you can repeat this saving throw.
  • If you attempt to make an attack with a weapon other than the Vengeance is Mine, you must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. If successful, you are able to wield that weapon without penalty until the start of your next turn. If you fail the saving throw, all attack rolls with that weapon automatically miss until the start of your next turn.
  • If you fail either of the preceding saving throws several times, you may steep into madness, and be unwittingly drawn towards actions of evil alignment if you are not already evil. (At the DM's discretion, this may take the form of long-term madness effects or permanent character changes.)
