Lexus RC F Sport First Drive: Coupe'd Up Like the Rest Of Us

This luxurious two-door is showing its age, but it’s still a rewarding car for people who love to drive.

Lexus RC Full Overview

The Lexus RC coupe, like the recently updated-for Lexus IS sedan, has been around for some time, first going on sale in and receiving a major face-lift in It doesn't have too many competitors. Sporty luxury coupes aren't nearly as popular as upscale SUVs these days, leaving the Lexus battling three primary competitors: the BMW 2 Series, the Infiniti Q60, and the Audi A5. Within that bunch, The RC is the only one to offer a naturally aspirated engine, and as a result, it falls somewhat awkwardly between rivals that use turbocharged four-cylinder powerplants and those with mightier turbocharged V-6 engines.

We got our hands on an example of the midrange Lexus RC F Sport, which sits above the entry-level RC and below the muscular RC F. Over the span of two weeks, we attacked canyon roads, climbed mountains, and took on some heady freeway mileage to see if the RC has the goods to impress as it nears its twilight years.

Natural Aspirator

It packs a hp V-6 engine that produces lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission handles gear changes and sends power to the rear wheels in this guise, though an all-wheel-drive variant is available. The engine sounds great, and shifts come quickly, crisply, and accurately. It's one of the rare naturally aspirated powerplants still on sale; revving it out for all its worth is enjoyable, and doing so is met with a great exhaust note.

Maybe I've gotten used to the spindle grille, but the Lexus RC still looks sharp to me all these years later, even if I'm in the minority. Our car came with Metallic Infrared paint, a premium color for an additional $, accented with additional orange F Sport brake calipers ($). There's very little chrome on the exterior, just one strip on each side mirror, which should help prevent this car from looking dated for years to come. Otherwise, dark gunmetal gray trims the rest of the vehicle, endowing it with a mature, serious look. The power moonroof, which also helps brighten up the black and gray cabin, added another $1, to the total sum.

On the open road, the RC F Sport serves as a GT-lite. It's not nearly as powerful as its big brother, the gorgeous and capable LC, but its adaptive F Sport suspension does a great job soaking up road imperfection in the Normal drive mode and stiffens up for better body control when set to Sport S or Sport S+ mode. Although the throttle and brake pedals provide direct and predictable feel, the V-6 doesn't quite provide enough grunt to match its sporty aesthetic.

In addition to the RC not being quite as quick as it feels like it should be, fuel economy isn't too impressive, either. The EPA rates the RC F Sport at 20/28 mpg city/highway. Drivers who like to zip off of the line can expect those numbers to dip to old-school muscle-car digits if they aren't careful. This is partially because this Lexus tips the scales just shy of two tons. So even though it's nimble, its heftiness hurts at the pump and the dragstrip.

This prevailing sense of predictability prevents the RC F Sport from offering true excitement. The engine, though it provides decent power at the top end of the rev range, doesn't quite have the torque to make launches or on-ramp runs exhilarating. At best, it brought a smirk to my face as I navigated tricky roads with ease and evoked some utterances of surprise that a midrange Lexus coupe handled so well without any drama whatsoever. It simply complies with the driver's wishes. For some folks, that's all they want in a car, and I get the appeal of that characteristic.

F-ing Well Equipped

Our car came equipped with a smattering of options, most notably the Lexus Dynamic Handling package with dynamic rear steering and variable-gear ratio steering ($1,), which helped the coupe handle with impressive poise on winding roads. The steering feels direct, gives good feedback, and is tuned well for navigating technical routes. A Torsen limited-slip differential ($) also helped up our test car's handling. It even rode on summer tires, which had plenty of grip for brisk jaunts on our favorite roads.

Interior amenities are typical Lexus: a somewhat anachronistic user interface (saved in part by Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) and excellent materials and build quality. The leather seats were comfortable on the long haul and supportive when I took advantage of the car's great handling characteristics on fun roads. The transmission tunnel is pretty large and eats into the cockpit space, and there aren't a ton of storage cubbies, but then again, this is a compact coupe, not a bulbous crossover, so this detraction might not be a penalty for buyers expecting a cocoon-like cockpit. Trunk space is plentiful for a pair of travelers who don't like to travel light.

Good Deal or No Deal

Other cool features on our test car include the triple-beam LED headlights ($1,), a package that bundles in-car navigation and the Mark Levinson audio package ($2,), and the Intuitive Parking Assist sensor package ($). In all, our model we tested, almost $10, more than the $50, starting price for the RWD RC F Sport test car topped $60, Its performance lies in between the trim levels and engines of its competitors, but its starting price is more closely aligned with higher performance cars such as the Audi S5, which starts at $53, and has a more powerful turbocharged V-6 engine.

The RC F Sport is fun to drive without offering paradigm-shifting acceleration or speed. It's comfortable both physically and in the manner it performs. Those looking for more excitement should opt for the full-hog RC F. However, for dependable, luxurious transportation that can still provide driving joy when there are fun roads to explore, the RC F Sport is worth considering.

If you aren't careful, the Lexus RC's looks will con you into thinking it's a sporty muscle coupe with canyon-carving abilities, but behind its athletic façade it's really a big softie. You can choose from a turbocharged four-cylinder or a naturally-aspirated V-6, but no matter the engine the RC is best suited for comfortable commutes and boulevard cruises.The interior is comfortable and spacious—at least for the driver and front passenger—and the Lexus's plush cabin environs feel appropriately luxurious. A host of standard and optional infotainment and driver-assistance tech is available too, but nothing about the RC is cutting edge.

Lexus's sports coupe is wholly unchanged for and it rolls right into the new year with no notable changes to report.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The RC is an interesting car because it looks inherently sporty; however, it fails to live up to that illusion. That makes us question stepping up to the more powerful RC, either with or without the F Sport package. Those looking for luxury and performance from a two-door coupe should consider one of its competitors, such as the Genesis G70 or the Audi A5 Sportback. Instead, we'd stick with the entry-level RC that has all the style of the RC for less money. Those who want all-wheel drive can have it for about $ more. We'd also opt for the Premium package that adds heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and more. The individual options we like are the inch wheels, parking sensors, sunroof, heated steering wheel, and the upgraded LED headlights.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The RC is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder making horsepower and mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is its only setup. We found the automatic to be a good match for the turbo four, but the engine isn't up to the task of pulling the RC around with any alacrity. Lexus offers two versions of its V-6 to address the lack of power. Under the hood of the all-wheel-drive RC, the V-6 makes horsepower and pairs with a six-speed automatic. The range-topping RC gets a hp V-6 that teams up with the eight-speed automatic (RWD only) or the six-speed (AWD only). In our testing, we've found this engine to be velvety smooth with linear power delivery, but it's still not as gutsy as its rivals. While it managed a second run from zero to 60 mph, the BMW i coupe we tested did the deed in seconds. Ride comfort is where the RC succeeds—and it does so with honors. Upgrading to larger wheels with lower profile tires, as featured on the RC F Sport we tested, does put a sharper edge on the ride, but it is never harsh. The RC is not as eager as tauter coupes when it comes to enthusiastic driving, but there's still some room to play. The steering wheel transmits a good amount of road feeling, and there's enough feedback to let you know when the front tires are losing their grip on the pavement.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Fuel-economy ratings for all of the RC's available engines are unremarkable and are outperformed by most rivals, with the most efficient model—the rear-wheel drive RC—earning ratings of 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The turbocharged four-cylinder's real-world performance on our highway fuel-economy test route turned out to be a disappointing 29 mpg; in our testing, many higher-powered rivals either matched or surged past their highway estimates. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The RC's well-made interior is stylish, comfortable, and spacious, but only for front-seat passengers. Its wild exterior styling also comes with an interior drawback: big blind spots. The front seats in our RC F Sport test vehicle were supportive, well cushioned, and wrapped in supple leather. All RC models come with dual-zone automatic climate control adjusted by touch-sensitive slider controls that are surprisingly intuitive and easy to use. Cargo space is limited in the RC, so if you're looking to take a long road trip, you'd better pack light. While the RC's trunk swallowed four of our carry-on cases, it managed to add only an additional five with both of its rear seats folded. Small-item storage throughout the cabin isn't particularly voluminous, but the Lexus's rivals don't offer much, either.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All RC models come with a inch infotainment display set inside the multi-level dashboard. The system is controlled by a knob and a series of buttons on the center console. When equipped with one of the two optional navigation packages, the system swaps the rotating knob for a laptop-style touchpad that is frustrating to use because of its imprecision. Onboard Wi-Fi with 4G LTE, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa integration are all standard, but you can't get Android Auto.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The RC has a smorgasbord of standard driver-assistance technology. For more information about the RC's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning

Lexus provides a longer powertrain warranty than most of its rivals, but the rest of the RC's coverage is average. A year's worth of complimentary scheduled maintenance is nice, but the BMW 4-series offers three years of coverage.

Lexus RC and Quarter Mile

The Lexus RC is equipped with a naturally-aspirated liter V6 engine that pumps out horsepower to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. An all-wheel-drive model is optional, but that one sends the power via a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Because of that, the rear-wheel-drive version is the one to get – it’s not just more fun to drive, but it’s quicker and faster as well. In numbers, the RWD Lexus RC gets to 60 mph in seconds, while the AWD one gets there seconds later. The difference widens the more you press on – the RWD model can go up to mph, while the AWD one stops at mph.

There is a difference in how both cars drive as well. The AWD one has a slow-to-shift transmission, while the RWD one has a faster gearbox with a choice between Normal, Sport and Manual shifts via paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

Both models are behind the competitors when it comes to performance. The reason is the heavy body – the RC is one of the heaviest coupes out there.

This doesn’t affect the way it drives though. The RC offers the ride quality you’d expect from a Lexus, while also being good on twisty roads as well. The steering is nicely-weighted and quick to respond, giving the driver a good amount of control over the vehicle.

F Sport models are even better to drive, thanks to an upgraded suspension, rear-wheel-steering and variable-ratio-steering, all of them sharpening the reflexes of the car. This trim also comes with a Sport+ mode that makes the engine more responsive as well. The great thing about the F Sport trim is that it doesn’t spoil the ride quality, even though it’s a bit firmer.

Exterior & Interior

If you want a conservative or elegant-looking coupe, the Lexus RC is certainly not for you. It’s striking and aggressive from almost every angle. This is especially true for the front end, which looks downright menacing thanks to the wide-open spindle grille and sharp headlights. The F Sport model looks even more aggressive and is a real head-turner.

Inside, the RC has an interesting dash design, reminiscent of the one in the IS and LF-A. The materials are of a high quality and the fit and finish are top-notch, as expected from a Lexus. Atop the dash, there’s a new inch screen that houses the infotainment system. It’s not a touchscreen, however – this one is controlled via a touchpad - not a very happy solution when driving.

Conclusion

If you want the best possible performance from your next coupe, the RC may not be the best choice for you, as it is heavy and doesn’t accelerate with the same ferocity its German competitors do. That being said, the RC is still a great vehicle for those who value style and comfort, with a bit of driving enjoyment thrown in.
