Road construction projects slated for northeast North Dakota, northwest Minnesota

The North Dakota Department of Transportation Grand Forks District, which maintains state highways in Grand Forks, Pembina, Nelson, Walsh, Griggs, Steele, Cavalier, Ramsey and Cass counties, will spend about $40 million on construction projects in , said Jesse Kadremas, Grand Forks District assistant engineer.

About half of the $40 million will fund continuation of the project on U.S. Highway 2 that began last summer. The project includes mill and concrete overlay on the westbound lane of Highway 2 from Grand Forks Air Force Base to Grand Forks 69th Street, as well as mill and overlay on the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway from 69th Street to 55th Street.

Construction of turn lane improvements and intersection reconfiguration on U.S. Highway 2 near Turtle River State Park already has begun. The project, which began Monday, April 5, also includes improving the lighting at the intersection of Grand Forks County Road 2 and the Turtle River State Park entrance.

Farther west, in the North Dakota Department of Transportation Devils Lake District, about $ million will be spent this year on road improvement projects, said David Finley, department communications manager.

The Devils Lake District’s major projects are widening, mill and hot mix asphalt overlay on Highway from the junction of Highway 52, north to Hurdsfield; concrete pavement repair on the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 2 from Churchs Ferry to Devils Lake; and mill and hot mix asphalt overlay on the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 2 from Lakota to 2 miles east of Crary, Finley said.

In Minnesota, work on the Highways 1 and 59 roundabout in Thief River Falls will resume this spring, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation website. The cost of the project is $ million. The total cost of the project, which began in , is $ million.

Other northwest Minnesota projects include:

  • Resurfacing Highway 1 in Thief River Falls between Highway and Pennington County Road 8 at an estimated cost of $ million
  • Resurfacing the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 2 from East Grand Forks to Fisher at an estimated cost of $ million.
  • Replacing the concrete roadway on the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 2 from Highway 32 (Marcoux Corner) to miles west of Erskine. The $ million project, was slated to begin April 26, also will include installation of a reduced conflict intersection at Marcoux Corner.
  • Repair of the Highway 9 bridge over Marsh River south of Ada; the Highway 11 bridge over Silver Creek, east of Baudette; theHighway 32 bridge south of Greenbush; and the Highway 89 bridge over Roseau River, northwest of Roseau. The total cost of the bridge repair projects is estimated at $2 million.
  • Replace the internationalbridge over the Rainy River at an estimated cost of $ million. The total bridge replacement cost will be evenly divided between Minnesota and Ontario.
  • Repair of Highway 59 from Winger to Erskine and improve the pedestrian crossings in Winger. The estimated project cost is $ million.

US 2 North Dakota Road Construction Projects

Project Description

NDDOT will be working on several sections of US 2 this summer. In addition to the connection to the Williston Truck Reliever Route and the new overpass over 18th Street in Williston currently under construction, crews will be working on sections of US 2 from Berthold to Surrey and Berthold to Stanley.

Improvements on US 2 and 18th Street in Williston include the construction of an underpass for 18th Street and an overpass for US 2 in the city center of Williston.

Improvements on US 2 from east of Berthold to Stanley will include paving, striping and installation of rumble strips in this area. Lane closures are in place, speeds are reduced to 40 mph and a width restriction of 15 feet is in place. This improvement project in the Berthold and Stanley areas will be completed in July.

During the project, a lane closure will be in effect on the following highways:

  • In the westbound lanes from 3 miles west of the junction of US 52 to Stanley
  • From 2 miles west of Berthold to 1 mile east of Berthold on the eastbound roadway
