Thanks to the introduction of the Shelby 427 Cobra and further aided by being many pounds lighter, the Cobra continued its dominance on the racetrack; apart from the short-term Corvette Grand Sport adventure. Chevrolet engineers were forced to counter with a 427 of their own by enlarging the Corvette’s 396-cid V-8. The big-block engine was noted by the appropriate bulge in the hood. Performance was astounding: 0- to 60-mph in 4.8 seconds, 0- to 100-mph in 11.2 seconds, 12.8 second 1/4-mile and a 152-mph top speed. Ads in the period publications proudly announced, “With 427 cubic inches, who needs adjectives.”

Chevrolet produced a then-record 27,720 Corvettes, including 17,762 convertibles and 9,958 Sting Ray coupes (like this car) with a base price of $4,295 for the coupe version before options. The convertible was listed as $4,084. The Turbo-Jet 427 added a $312.85 to the bottom line. The extra cost for the L72 was justified as it included four-bolt mains, impact extruded aluminum pistons, a very aggressive camshaft, and a Holley 780-cfm carburetor mated to an aluminum intake and a free-flowing exhaust. The K66 transistorized ignition was a mandatory option with the L72, too, of which 5,528 buyers opted for the extra performance of the L72 engine.

This particular car is stated to be one of the “early production 450 horsepower models” versus the later rating of 425-hp. It is reported that at the estimated date of the third week of October, or approximately when serial number 3,000 went down the assembly line, the initial 450-hp and 400-hp ratings were lowered to 425 and 390 by edict from General Motors management due to rumored political reasons inside and outside the company. It is also shared that some of the air cleaner decals received the 450-hp markings, while others, such as this car, even in the earlier run dates still received the 425-hp air cleaner decal. The 450 horsepower engine is recognized as being the same unit as the 425 version; the lower figures are said to have been obtained by using a lower rpm rating.

This Corvette received a restoration in 2003 to show-quality standards and has been well-cared-for and driven sparingly since. The L72 car is finished in Nassau Blue, paint code 976, and also has a blue interior. The car comes with a comprehensive restoration and historical file; plus it is a National Council of Corvette Clubs first place winner in 2003 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and it was featured in the November 2015 edition of Corvette Enthusiast. Along with the legendary powerplant, this Corvette features an M22 four-speed manual transmission, a Posi-traction rear end with 4.10:1 gearing with large U-joint retainers, power windows, power antenna, tinted glass, AM/FM radio; correct 80-pound oil pressure gauge, tach and 160-mph speedometer. Among the additions are N.O.S. side exhausts, leather interior, goldline tires and correct reproduction knock-off wheels. Flight 427; now departing through gates 1, 2, 3 and 4.

For the 1966 Corvette, the big-block V-8 came in two forms: 390 bhp on 10.25:1 compression, and 425 bhp via 11:1 compression, larger intake valves, a bigger Holley four-barrel carburetor on an aluminum manifold, mechanical lifters, and four- instead of two-hole main bearing caps. Though it had no more horsepower than the previous high-compression 396, the 427 packed a lot more torque -- 460 pound/feet vs. 415. Of course, engine outputs were sometimes deliberately understated in the Sixties so as not to arouse the ire (and, subsequently the rates) of insurance companies. Here, 420 and 450 bhp would be closer to the truth.

Ordering a 427 Corvette meant you had to take it with Positraction and the close-ratio Muncie four-speed; there was no other choice. You also got an upgraded suspension, basically the same as the 396 package, as well as stouter, shot-peened halfshafts and U-joints and a higher-capacity radiator and sump.

Regardless of which axle ratio it turned, the 427 Sting Ray was an astonishing executor. With the short 4.11:1 gearing, 0-60 mph times were recorded in a nearly unbelievable 4.8 seconds, and 0-100 mph in 11.2 seconds, with a blistering top speed of 140 mph. The modest 3.36:1 ratio made things only a bit less sensational: Car and Driver reported 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and a standing quarter of 12.8 seconds at 112 mph.

With big-block V-8s being the order of the day, there was less demand for the 327, so small-block offerings were cut from five to two for 1966, and only the basic 300- and 350-bhp versions were retained. Arguably, these were still the best all-around engines. Both required premium fuel on compression ratios well over 10.0:1, and they didn't have the rocket-like thrust of the 427s, but their performance was impressive all the same. As before, both could be teamed with the Powerglide automatic, the standard three-speed manual, or either four-speed option.

Engine choices aside, the 1966 model year dawned quietly for the Sting Ray. Its frontal appearance was mildly altered with an eggcrate grille insert to replace the previous horizontal bars, and the coupe lost its roof-mounted extractor vents, which had proven inefficient. This relative lack of change reflected plans to bring out an all-new Corvette for 1967. It certainly did not reflect a fall-off in the car's popularity, however. In fact, 1966 would prove another record-busting year, with volume rising to 27,720 units, up some 4200 over 1965's 23,562 sales.

Son of a Gun — just what the Corvette needed, more power! Chevrolet has replaced last year's top-of-the-line 396-cu. in. engine with a 427. According to the factory, horsepower remains unchanged at 425, but torque has gone up from 415 lbs/ft. at 4000, to 465 at the same rpm. We asked one Chevrolet man why the increase in displacement and torque didn't have a parallel increase in horsepower. "This was done primarily to save weight," he said, with a twinkling eye; "you must remember that cast-iron is very heavy, and by removing thirty cubic inches of it, we have made a significant reduction in weight."

Last year's 396 "porcupine head" Corvette was cranking out quite a bit more than its advertised 425 bhp, and with 427 cu. in., the gap between advertised and actual becomes even broader. However, Chevrolet insists that there are only 425 horses in there, and we'll just have to take their word for it. Though we feel compelled to point out that these are 425 horses of a size and strength never before seen by man — horses as tall as houses, with hooves as big as bushel baskets. When you have this many of those horses exerting their full force against the small of your back, you are profoundly impressed, and you will most likely lose all interest in counting anyway.

Last month we said that the most dominant feature of any Ferrari was its engine. Well the same thing is true of this big 427 Sting Ray, except that we'd go one step farther and say that it's the power, more than the engine, that overwhelms every other sensation. There's power literally everywhere, great gobs of steam-locomotive, earth-moving torque. And because the Corvette is a relatively small object, and considerably lighter than the other American production cars that are fitted with such engines, there's a direct, one-to-one relationship between the amount of throttle opening and the physical and emotional sensations the driver feels.

Other Corvettes, either the current models with 327 cu. in. engines, or the older ones with the original 283, had a more "European feel." They were very powerful, but they had a zippy, high-winding, no-flywheel feel to them that's missing from the big 427. According to Zora Arkus-Duntov, Chevrolet's Corvette specialist from the very beginning, this difference in sensation is directly related to the comparative torque curves of the two engines. The hottest version of the 327, the 375-bhp fuel-injection engine, produced 350 lbs/ft of torque at 4600 rpm. The new 427 produces 465 lbs/ft at 4000 rpm. As you can see, the 327's rate of acceleration was still increasing after the 427's torque curve had dropped off. Thus, even though the 427 is delivering more torque and more acceleration, its earlier torque peak results in less sensation of acceleration in the higher rpm ranges.

Except for compensatory suspension changes and a few other twists and improvements, the 427 Sting Ray is basically identical to any other Sting Ray. But the big jump in power that came with the jump from 327 to 427 makes those detail changes critical.
