Taking a home pregnancy test is always a nail-biter. How accurate the results are depend a lot on when you take them and what the lines in the window reveal.
Eager parents-to-be are not famous for their patience, especially when it comes to checking — and rechecking — whether or not their baby-making efforts have paid off. If you're among their ranks, chances are you've stockpiled home pregnancy tests and use them regularly.
But though they’re an affordable, easy-to-use and convenient way to find out if you're expecting, home pregnancy tests can be confusing, especially if you are very early in your pregnancy. Here's a guide to deciphering what those little lines or plus signs mean.
What does a faint line on a pregnancy test look like?
Depending on what kind of pregnancy test you use, you'll see a plus or minus sign or, more commonly, a line or two in the window that reveals results.
Make sure you read the instructions on the pregnancy test packaging carefully so you know exactly what you should be looking for.
If you are pregnant but very early in your pregnancy, the line or double line on your pregnancy test will likely be barely visible, like a smudge of chalk. If you're farther along and the hormones are flowing, the line or lines will resemble marks drawn with a Sharpie.
If there's no line or positive result, it doesn't necessarily mean you're not pregnant (though that is a possibility). Instead, it could simply mean that there's not yet enough human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone produced by cells that will become the placenta after implantation, to be detected by the test.
What does a very faint line on a pregnancy test mean?
A very faint line on a pregnancy test usually means that implantation has occurred and you're in the early stages of pregnancy. But you'll want to test again a few days or weeks later to see if that line has become thicker and darker, meaning your pregnancy is progressing — and you can safely start getting excited!

It is possible to see a faint line on your pregnancy test and get your period a few weeks later, meaning that you're not actually pregnant, or were only briefly pregnant. This doesn't mean the test didn’t work, but you might have experienced a very early and common pregnancy loss called a chemical pregnancy. It could also indicate other kinds of early pregnancy losses like an ectopic pregnancy.
As upsetting as it can be, you probably never would have realized what had happened if that faint line hadn't clued you in, and the event will have no impact on your ability to get pregnant again. In fact, it can be considered a positive because it's proof that you can get pregnant.
The best way to know for sure that you're pregnant is to schedule an appointment with your OB/GYN and get a blood pregnancy test to confirm the pregnancy. This provides a number for your hCG level, which allows your doctor to see whether everything is progressing well in the early stages.

What does a positive pregnancy test result look like?
A positive pregnancy test result will typically either show up as a plus sign, two double lines, or one line in a results circle or window, though there are other kinds of test results, including the digital ones that show the word "yes" or "pregnant" when they're positive.
Can a barely visible pregnancy test result be negative?
A barely visible pregnancy test result usually can't be negative — because it detected hCG — but it might indicate a false positive for actual pregnancy or an early pregnancy loss. You can also get a false negative result.
Most home pregnancy tests claim to be up to 99 percent accurate — and when tested by lab technicians in ideal settings they probably are — but studies of home pregnancy tests used in the real world by women at home suggest they're slightly less reliable.
Here are instances in which you might see a faint line on a pregnancy test but are not actually pregnant or have a nonviable pregnancy:
- Menopause. If a woman in perimenopause or menopause misses her period and takes a pregnancy test, the results sometimes (but rarely) show up positive due to abnormally elevated levels of luteinizing hormone.
- When you're taking fertility and other medications. False positives can be caused by traces of fertility drugs or other medications containing hCG (though it's unlikely). If you received an hCG injection as part of fertility care, levels can remain elevated for at least seven days afterwards even if you're not pregnant.
- When you have an early pregnancy loss. A false positive can also indicate a recent chemical pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy or other type of early pregnancy loss.
- Illness. Very rarely, some cancers that interfere with hormonal production can result in a misleading pregnancy test.
Here's why you might be pregnant yet see a negative result on your pregnancy test:
- It's too early. If it's very early in your pregnancy, concentrations of hCG may not have reached levels that are detectable yet. The best bet is to wait a week and test again.
- You checked results too soon. Of course you're impatient! But give the test the full time recommended on the package instructions to reveal results. You can use the timer on your watch or a kitchen timer to be sure you're waiting long enough.
- Your urine is diluted. Good for you for staying hydrated. But if your urine is too diluted for the test to detect hCG, the results might be inaccurate. However, though taking the test first thing in the morning, when your urine is the most concentrated, is often recommended, it's not necessary because modern-day pregnancy tests are super sensitive and can pick up hCG whenever they're used.
- Human error or expired test. If you didn't follow the instructions to the letter, or have a home pregnancy test that's expired, there's a chance that the results might be inaccurate.
If you get a faint positive pregnancy test, are you definitely pregnant?
If you get a faint positive pregnancy test, you are almost always pregnant, but it may be too early to celebrate. Home pregnancy tests differ in their ability to detect a pregnancy in women who have recently missed a period, either because of a chemical pregnancy or other reason. If you have a negative test but think you might be pregnant, or vice versa, repeat the test one week after your missed period or talk to your practitioner. And remember, a blood pregnancy test from your OB/GYN is always more accurate.

Am I Pregnant?
Follow the instructions below to understand your FIRST RESPONSE Pregnancy Test results:
Two pink lines in the pregnancy test result window means you are pregnant. A positive test result shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected.
One pink line and one line lighter than the other in the pregnancy test result window means you are pregnant. Any positive test result (even a very faint line) shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected.
One pink line in the pregnancy test result window means you may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell.
CAUTION: If you choose to test early and the result is negative, you may not be pregnant or it may be too early to tell because your urine does not have enough hCG for the test to give a positive result. If you do not get your period within seven days, you should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Test. If you receive another Not Pregnant result and your period still hasn’t started, we recommend you consult your healthcare professional.
Faint Positive Home Pregnancy Test: Am I Pregnant?
Taking a home pregnancy test and getting a faint positive line doesn’t always mean you’re pregnant. Sometimes, what appears to be a positive line is actually an evaporation line. These misleading lines can appear in the results window as urine evaporates from the stick. If a faint evaporation line develops on your home pregnancy test, you may mistakenly think that you’re pregnant.
It can be hard to determine whether a faint line is a positive result or an evaporation line. The primary difference is that evaporation lines appear in the test window several minutes after the recommended time for checking the test results.
If you take a home pregnancy test, it’s important to read and carefully follow the instructions. The package will let you know when to check your test results, which can be within three to five minutes, depending on the manufacturer.
If you check your results within the recommended time frame and see a faint positive line, you’re most likely pregnant. On the other hand, if you miss the window for checking the results and you don’t check the test until 10 minutes later, a faint line may be an evaporation line, which means you’re not pregnant.
If there’s any confusion about whether a faint line is a positive line or an evaporation line, retake the test. If possible, wait two or three days before taking another one. If you are pregnant, this gives your body additional time to produce more of the pregnancy hormone, which can result in a clear, undeniable positive line.
It also helps to take the home pregnancy test first thing in the morning. The less diluted your urine, the better. Make sure you check the results within the appropriate time frame to avoid confusing an evaporation line with a positive line.
What is an evaporation line on a pregnancy test?
Are you having a hard time telling if your test result is a faint positive or evaporation line? Here’s how to figure it out.
By OBGYN Dr. Kenosha Gleaton
Peeing on a stick (affectionately known as POAS) can bring a lot of emotions and sometimes confusion. If you get a faint line, how do you know if that’s a positive result or an evaporation line? This guide will walk through how to tell the difference and how to avoid getting evaporation lines.
An evaporation line on a pregnancy test is a faint line (or rather, mark) caused by a test reaction that occurs when the urine evaporates, or when the test gets wet. Sometimes this line appears in the test window, making it look like a faint positive result.
Evaporation lines are colorless streaks, not actual lines. They typically appear if a person waits for longer than the suggested time to read the test result. An evaporation line can also appear if the test gets wet.
Evaporation lines are actually streaks and not faint lines. They are called “squinters,” meaning you have to look closely to see them. Often, these lines will not go entirely across the test. Depending on the type of test, the evaporation line may look more gray than pink. If an evaporation line appears, it is best to take another test for an accurate result.
There are two ways to tell the difference between a positive result and an evaporation line:
- Is it a pink line? If the result shows a pink test line that looks similar to the pink control line, then it’s likely a positive result. A positive result will run from the top of the test window to the bottom with the same thickness as the control line (even if it’s more faint). Is it a greyish white squinter that doesn’t look like the control line? Then it’s probably an evaporation line.
- When did the line show up? If a pink line showed up quickly, then it is likely a positive, pregnant result. If the line only showed up much later (say ten minutes or more) than the control line, it may be an evaporation line.
The best way to know for sure is take another test. We suggest waiting a day, since the level of HcG (the pregnancy hormone) in your urine typically doubles in a matter of days. If the line on your test tomorrow becomes darker and more clear, then you can be confident it’s a positive pregnancy test and not an evaporation line.
Usually evaporation lines appear if you haven’t followed the instructions on the test’s packaging. But if you continue to get evaporation lines, we suggest:
- Try peeing in a cup, and dipping the test in the cup (instead of peeing directly on the test). This prevents splashing of urine that can make a test invalid.
- Try testing first thing in the morning (when your urine has a higher concentration of hCG).
- Only use tests before the expiration date on the wrapper.
- Don’t open the wrapper until you’re ready to start testing, and don’t use it if the wrapper is damaged or torn.
- Store your pregnancy tests between °F (°C).
- Wait five minutes to look at your results—and make sure to read the results within 15 minutes.
Make sure to find a pregnancy test that uses pink dye. That's because blue dye tests are notorious for leaving evaporation lines. The Natalist Pregnancy Test is easy to use, with pink dye that makes the answer as clear as possible.
- Evaporation lines do occasionally happen when the urine evaporates.
- The best way to tell is by reading the results within the timeframe explained in the instructions.
- A positive result will have a test line that runs from the top of the test window to the bottom with the same thickness and color as the control line.
- An evaporation line will be a grayish white mark that appears after ten minutes.
- The best way to know if you are pregnant is to test again tomorrow.

Very faint line on pregnancy test: am I pregnant?
“You’re very likely to be pregnant,” says midwife Anne Richley, “Even the faintest line in the results window means the test has found pregnancy hormones in your urine. A false positive result is very rare.”
So how faint is very faint?
Obviously, everyone has a different idea of what a faint line looks like but we’re talking anything from not very obvious to proper put-your-specs-on-and-peer-at – as you can see from the picture of three different pregnancy test sticks here, taken by a BabyExpert mum.
For one mum, Katelaura, on our forum, the line was so light she wasn’t sure what was going on: ”I am also having faint lines.
“Took a 6 day early CB test 4 days ago in the evening, faint line, took another CB test the next morning, even fainter, then took a one step strip test this morning and no line at all.”
Why is the line so faint?
Pregnancy tests are designed to detect hCG in your wee – because hCG is an early marker of pregnancy. How much hCG there’ll be in your wee depends on how long you’ve been pregnant: the more days that have passed since sperm fertilised egg, the higher your hCG levels will be – and the stronger the line on your pregnancy test. So, a very faint line nearly always means you’re just a few days pregnant.
Can a faint line ever mean I’m not pregnant?
It’s very unlikely but is possible. ‘False positives’ generally only happen if you’ve done the test wrong, have used a test that’s past its expiry date, are ‘reading’ the result long after the wait time outlined on the packet or are taking certain medications.
You might also get a false positive if you’ve had an hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) injection as part of infertility treatment or have particular medical conditions that mean you produce high levels levels of hCG.
But it’s very early days
It is worth knowing (and bracing yourself for the possibility) that this is a very early stage of your pregnancy, and sadly not all pregnancies will make it through the first weeks.
So should I do another test?
Yes. You’ll probably want to anyway, just for reassurance. And, if you wait a day or so (more, if you can bear the tension), your very faint line may well have become a nice, dark one.
However, occasionally these follow-up tests may come up negative. If this happens to you, it probably means you’ve had a ‘chemical pregnancy‘ – or a very early miscarriage.
It’s actually quite common – happening in 50 to 60% of first pregnancies. There are all sorts of reasons for it, from poor egg or sperm quality to infection, but it really doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll happen to you again.
It’s probably wise to wait out at least one menstrual period till you try for a baby again, but there’s no need to see your GP unless you find you’re one of the unlucky few who seem to have repeated chemical pregnancies.
What other mums are saying about faint lines on their pregnancy test
“My first positive with DD1 was reealllyy faint but they just kept getting stronger so it’s probably just that you’re testing quite early.” Taflo
“It doesn’t have to be a thick strong line, I’ve never had one but a faint line is a line, and a line is a positive!” – Wishuponastar87
