How Can You Troubleshoot a Troy-Bilt Riding Mower?

Does the lawnmower have enough oil? The oil levels can fall over the course of a few months if the mower isn't used and is allowed to evaporate. Because the oil sits for a long period of time, debris will also settle in the container. Dirty oil can cause problems as well, and the mower may struggle to use it adequately. Make sure to check the level and then change the oil if necessary. Do not use the mower with low engine oil, or the engine could be destroyed.

Has the fuel level been checked? If not, the mower may not have enough gas to power itself. Additionally, if the fuel cap is not venting correctly, it may force the engine to stop running. To fix this issue, simply replace the cap.

If the mower won't start up or is choking, check the fuel delivery system. If the fuel line is cracked, gasoline may be draining before it can reach the engine. The line should be replaced if that is the issue, and new fuel can then be added as necessary.

The carburetor can also be a problem if it hasn't been changed recently. Fortunately, this piece can be removed and cleaned. Remove it and clean out the main fuel jet, the float, the throttle plate and the bowl. These can be cleaned with carburetor cleaner. A clogged main jet in this piece can make it difficult for the mower to run correctly.

The ignition coil is the last major part that could have a problem that is fixable at home. If the mower hasn't been able to start at all, this could be the issue. To check if the ignition coil has a problem, remove the wire from the spark plug. Then, remove the plug from the engine. With the same wire, connect both ends to the spark plug and touch one part of the plug against a metal bit on the engine. Pull on the starter rope at this point. If it's working, a blue spark will occur.

If the lawnmower is still not working after trying the above troubleshooting steps, it may be time to call a service center to have it repaired by a technician.

How to Troubleshoot a Troy-Bilt Riding Lawnmower

Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images

Even though your Troy-Bilt riding lawnmower is a quality machine, you may still have occasional problems with it. It can be extremely frustrating to find that your mower won’t start, or that it cuts off once you start mowing. Before you call a professional, or take it in for repair, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot your mower. Be sure to refer to your user manual for specific instructions and a diagram of your particular mower model.

What to Do When Your Engine Won’t Turn Over

Check to make sure the cutting deck is disengaged, that your parking brake is set, and that the safety switch is not on.

Look at the battery to make sure it is installed properly and use a voltmeter to ensure that the battery is fully charged.

Check the fuse box and all connections, and check to see if fuses are burnt out and need to be replaced. Also make sure the ground wire is intact; this is a black wire that goes from your engine to the frame of your mower.

What to Do When Your Engine Turns Over But Won’t Start

Inspect the engine throttle choke and control to make sure it is positioned correctly.

Make sure you have gasoline in your tank; also check to make sure the fuel line and fuel filter aren’t clogged with dirt or debris. If you’re unsure, replace your fuel filter.

Look to make sure the spark plug wire hasn’t disconnected; replace the spark plug with another one.

What to Do When Your Engine Vibrates or Emits Smoke

Inspect the blade to make sure it isn’t bent. If so, this will cause the lawnmower to vibrate.

Check the belt that turns the blade to make sure it isn’t damaged.

Tighten or replace the mounting bolt to the blade.

You could probably find a trustful repair shop at your local tractor store (if they sell Troy-Bilt and you want only genuine replacement parts).

I'm sure Troy-Bilt has authorized repair shops in your area.

It is not ethical to recommend personal or private repair shops as these can have differences of opinion as to the quality/honesty of that particular shop.
But; whoever you choose, be sure to search for any negative comments on their site as well as general comments.

Specify what repairs/parts you want replaced/fixed and request them to save old parts for you (not tires).
Just be sure to get a written estimate (check space where it says how much they can go over the amount on the form and change or cancel). Also ask for a specified date of finished work/pick-up.

Why Won't This Troy Bilt Start

When the captain remembered for what purpose he was looking for this road, the thought occurred to him that in a company car on a night patrol, he could easily cut. Out the Turtle. But such an act smelled foul, and it could surely be called meanness. Sometimes there was a desire to just stop the Bandit, to ask what the Turtle was running from, what he was looking for in the night.
