10 Places in TENNESSEE You Should NEVER Move To

Just ran across this forum and spent a while looking it over. Im moving back to Tn this Monday and personally? I can't wait!!!! I lived in Sevier Co for 6 years and for all its sometimes headaches, I adored it.

I ran across a thread with posts back to discussing people wanting to move into this area, and although there was some truly helpful, insightful and well meaning cautions ( of which were absolutely totally justified), I just feel I need to put my two cents in also !

Being sick of the small town crap where I was from, I packed my two kids up and moved what some will call blindly , to Gatlinburg. (they were in the 8th and 10th grades). I had visited here before and before the actual move we came up for a week to check it all out ( PLEASE do this if you are considering moving to this area )

GP(Gatlinburg-Pittman, the high school in Gatlinburg is constantly rated as one of the best in the state and gives out SO many scholarships you just wouldn't believe it. It is an "older" year model school and I was kind of taken back by that considering its reputation, but the way I saw it was as long as the education is so good, Im not going to worry that the classes aren't in a brand new school.

DO NOT move to Gatlinburg "just cuz u think its purdy up there". Big bad no no. Yes its absolutely gorgeous in the mountains but it is a tourist area, dependant on the whims, good graces, good moods and availablity of the tourist that come here, and the economy does play a major role in what you make and how long you make it. Its not unheard of for someone in Gatlinburg in the restuarant or hospitality/hotel/cabin sector to go 3 and 4 months without a stitch of work to do.

IF YOU CAN'T BUDGET YOUR MONEY I'd rethink living here and working in the tourist sector. ( learned that one out the hard way the first year I was here and didnt know exactly how bad it could get. I was a server in Gburg)

Yes, Sevier county is very touristy and as I've heard some call it " redneck Las Vegas" and even " a midget Bavarian Disney World on crack".. but ya know? It is what it is. It IS a tourist area. One of the busiest in the US and definitely in the south. Traffic is a nightmare , rental houses are sometimes hard to find, tax is high, lines are long and tempers of the tourists are short. But again, its a tourist area , its not just the Smoky Mountains and Cades Cove. If it wasn't a tourist area most reading this wouldn't even know it really exsisted.

Please understand its feast or famine here. If you budget, you can make a living, have your kids go to a great school and if you work hard and mind your p's and q's, you will get to know some of the most loyal, upstanding, hardworking, dedicated, family oriented people in the south.

Its no bed of roses here. In the six years I lived here previously, I've seen people come in ( and also read on forums) about how dissillusioned they were after they got here. It takes a special kind of patient nut case to live in a place where it can take you two hours to drive 5 miles.. LITERALLY ( ie: the Spur between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg which is 5 miles of forest, it takes that long to drive it during the "Rod Runs")

I happen to love the tourist industry. I have a degree in mainframe programming, worked at it 6 months and walked away from a killer job, to go back to being a server because its what I enjoyed doing and made great money at it.

If you want work that is not tourist related, be prepared to drive to Knoxville every day.

Know that when someone tells you "its 10 minutes from town", that might mean its only 2 miles but the roads and or traffic makes it last that long. And longer.

Please everyone, do research research and more research, and visit a number of times before coming up here and living. I wasn't born and raised here but I along with the real locals, consider myself a "local" after so long there, but it breaks our heart, and kinda ticks some of us off to hear people who just pulled up stakes with no clue what was what, and moved down here, and trashed it because "its a tourist trap". We know its a tourist trap thats what it was designed to be from the beginning!( I do mean that with all respect! )

If you build it, they will come.. and they come in drove after increasing drove every year. Sure we dont have a lot of room for road expansion considering we're butted up against a mountain range (isn't that what yall came to see anyway?) But for all the negative comments about this area, Sevier County must be doing something right or all of its towns, and country side, all of its shops and restaurants etc, wouldn't continually be growing making it more crowded so it can handle all the tourist that do in fact come.

I've ranted long enough, and I truly dont want to offend anyone. Its just sad to see people complaining, about the very thing that made them move to a place to begin with because " they didnt know".

I was told Gburg has more cops than any other city in the nation - relative to its population - because the year-round residents are only 1,? or was it 2 or 3, Anyhoo I don't know if that means there are a lot of arrests and I don't know what these cops do all day. For out-of-towners be aware that the spur (explained above) is federal jurisdiction and if you get pulled over there it's by the feds not the state or city/county.

Thanks ABTA for a great post and great info about the school. I think the best thing about living in Gburg would be having a place to park for free. I think there are quiet areas of the town, year-round, but you have to venture into chaos for certain needs. There's always back roads.

The census shows Gatlinburg with a population of 5,, up from the census of 3,

A website for the Gatlinburg Police Dept. shows a total of 55 employees which includes 45 officers, 8 dispatchers, and 2 clerical positions. This would allow for 15 officers on duty during each 8-hour shift. That's certainly not excessive due to the number of tourists in the area at any given time of the year. There wasn't a lot of crime in Gatlinburg during the years I lived in Sevier County, but all law enforcement stayed busy just maintaining the flow of traffic and tourists.

And, I wouldn't count on the feds being the only ones to pull someone over on the spur. I don't know that I've ever seen a "federal patrol car" but I have seen speeders on the spur getting tickets by local law enforcement

Here is the info I wanted to post:
The city cannot and does not give tickets on the spur It is national park area and only rangers give tickets. Not even the sheriff can.
Gatlinburg may not have more policemen per capita than any other city, but it's close
Per Capita means the amount of policemen per people
so with only residents, if we only had 5 policemen that would be 1 per
Gatlinburg has 45 sworn officers, the dispatchers don't count

Your source is incorrect. Gatlinburg is an incorporated city and is not in the National Park. Rangers may only give tickets within the National Park. The park boundaries end their jurisdiction. Gatlinburg's police department has all the rights and privileges of any other city police department in the United States - including writing tickets and arresting individuals for criminal offenses. Also, per capita means "per one head" or "per one person". It is not per people. The population of Gatlinburg is 5, With 45 sworn police officers, That is one police officer per people.

By 'The Spur' are you referring to TN Scenic? Because the strip of highway between the US bypass ramp (near Gatlinburg) and Canary Creek Rd (near Pigeon Forge) is marked on my map as part of the National Park. Normally, national parks are patrolled by park rangers. However, in my experience, they will sometimes have cooperation agreements with local law enforcement agencies (El Malpais National Park, in New Mexico, comes to mind). Either way, the OP was talking about slow traffic conditions on the road during high traffic events, not getting ticketed by police on the highway.

Isn't there an alternative route into Pigeon Forge from Gatlinburg when things clog up like that? Or is it so circuitous that it would take as long (or longer) than sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on TN?

I'm only aware of a couple of other routes from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge and they surely aren't "quick" but at least you would keep moving and not be at a complete stand still. And they certainly are not an option for the average tourist to travel. One route would take you through Glades Rd and out through Caton's Chapel the other could be Hwy and through Jones Cove - neither are shorter in distance, or a quick and easy drive, and shorter in time only during "the season." They are not easy to navigate and someone can become off-track and lost in the blink of an eye

There could be other routesI'm just not familiar with them.

Gatlinburg is more fun and unique in my view

it isn't tacky like Myrtle Beach. That may be true of Pigeon Forge.

Yeah, for sure! I still go to Gatlinburg a couple times a year. Asheville too.

Both are incredible destinations, but completely different categories of cities with respect to city size.

Asheville and Chattanooga--yes, a bit more fair. Although Chattanooga larger, but also more rough around the edges than Asheville.

??? Gatlinburg has no pawn shops Asheville has 7. Cherokee is a better analogy to Gatlinburg and it has 3 pawn shops. They both have 3 tobacco stores. Asheville appears to have

Such a lopsided comparison. It's kinda like comparing Atlanta to Chattanooga.
I think it's more like comparing Charleston to Myrtle Beach.

Gatlinburg has better scenery in the immediate area, but Asheville is just an overall superior and more well-rounded experience. Better food, better entertainment, interesting quirkiness, plus a great craft beer scene. Gatlinburg is cute, and I like it better than its neighbor Pigeon Forge, but it's still a copy-paste tourist town.

EDIT: I will admit that while Asheville is better for adults, Gatlinburg is more fun for kids.

I would say, Vail or Aspen, Colorado--although both are a bit more upscale than Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg acts like a ski resort town with many millions more tourists than most ski resort towns--and a little touch of a bit of tacky here and there.

Myrtle Beach is similar, but a lot bigger than Gatlinburg, so it also gets more crime, and things that go along with more population.

Also, Ocean City, MD or Branson, MO to a lesser extent, are similar to Gatlinburg.

I don't see how a beach town can be similar to Gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg's identity is being located next to mountains, and it is next to the most visited national park in the country.

In terms of tourist attractions, hotels, resorts, etc., very similar.

Pigeon Forge is similar to Myrtle Beach - despite the different settings.

Gatlinburg's counterpart is Estes Park, CO.
