John deere 4010 injector pump

John deere 4010 injector pump DEFAULT

Eastern IowaI posted here a while back about a problem I was having with a injection pump on a JD , I pulled the pump and the shaft was sheared and the pump was seized. A seized pump with a sheared shaft has no core value so I bought a pump from a salvage yard. A new pump with no core cost over $ I am going to roll the dice and put it on as is with out having it checked out at a pump shop as I suspect that would end up costing me $s. I don't have a tech manual for this tractor and would appreciate some tips on installing the pump. I would guess I align a mark on the flywheel with some other mark on the housing while the number 1 cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke and then line up a couple of marks on the pump and drop it in. The number 1 cylinder is the front one isn't it? I am just going by my experience installing a distributor, I have never installed a pump. Any tips or corrections would be appreciated. Thanks.

NE MoI could give you a brief run down on here, but I would suggest you get an I & T manual and follow it. There will be other things covered in the manual that you will want to know as well. Money well spent.

Callao MissouriI could have saved you a boat load of money on a pump. I have one in the old refrigerator in the shop off my , I put a newer pump with the timing advance and electric fuel shut off on my As fare as timing the unit, run the flywheel up to 10* btdc or 14* btdc, I cant remember, but I do know for a fact that my IT manual has that figure wrong so I do the other of what it says and it is out in the shop. You can check with a flash light, look down in the inj pump shaft hole, and there is a timing mark V stamped on the end of the oil pump, if that is faceting or a bit passed the cam shaft you are on 1 compression stroke where you need to be. If it is pointing away from the cab you need to turn the flywheel * before pump installation. then slide the pump on, connect the lines be sure to use new washers on the banjo bolts and you are set, you may have to dynamic time it a bit after you get it running. ( dynamic timing is loosen the two mounting bolts ever so slightly and rotate the pump forward and back with channelocks till the engine sounds its best at all rpm levels, re tighten the two nuts.

I strongly caution you to not just throw that pump on. The umbrella seals on the pump shaft should be replaced and chances are the governor ring is getting hard and brittle if it is not broke already. If any of the above mentioned items are ageing it could fill the crank case full of fuel, or plug the return line with governor ring parts soon after installation and use witch will lead to running for a short time and dyeing. The seal kit for that pump is only $70 and it comes with the above mentioned items. If the pump housing needs a bushing pressed in or a metering valve that is extra but most times you can get by without depending on age. It takes oprox 4 hrs labor to disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble the pump for installation and then you are set.

Buy the way, rosamaster pumps do seize the head every now and then, it is happening more and more often with the poorer fuel we are getting now. One other thing that will kill a rosa master is a sudden temp change of the pump head, most commonly referd to as power washing around the inj pump while warm.

Sorry about the book Jon

Eastern IowaThanks for the information, nothing is ever as easy as I would like it to be, I suppose I'll have the pump checked out.

Eagle Lake, TexasYou need to determine why the old pump seized. Could be water in the fuel or a stuck injector nozzle. If you do not correct the problem you will seized the next pump also.

Eastern IowaI am planning to have the injectors checked, I did not know water in the fuel will seize the pump. The tractor has been sitting a while. I thought it was getting fuel at first then she quit getting fuel and I determined the pump was seized. Never saw a trace of water when cracking lines loose or pulling ingectors or pump.

I took off my injector pump today to get it re-built. Took several hours as I went slow and tried to clean things up. But here is the question: the pump timing marks lined up at about 5 deg before TDC, not The tractor was always hard starting cold but ran well at all rpm. So what problems did it cause? The hard starting? Also, should I have the injectors cleaned at JD? And how much are we talking? Tractor has about 5, hours on it and the injectors are the larger early types.

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to northvale-PA,
northvale,

What is the reason you pulled the pump?

Also ,if by JD you mean titanic tractor , they no longer have a fuel shop , I bought it ,test stand and all.

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to george md,

tractor won't run, black granules in the pump timing window, means a re-build is in order. It went fast.

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to northvale-PA,

A with an updated pump having speed advance is timed different than the original pump without speed advance. I'm not sure without looking at my shop manual but I'm thinking around 8 degrees for the advance pump. Talk to your diesel shop when you pick up your pump. They can tell you the timing procedure.

A JD static timing is set at TDC not running. This is with the side timing window off the injection pump and the flywheel at TDC. Make sure you have not turned the engine backward. If you have then go far enough backward then turn back forward to TDC. You need the back lash out of the drive gears.

The 14 degrees they are talking about is through the timing window when running at full engine speed. You have to have a clear window that is marked with timing marks. It is adjusted by allen screw on the lower side of the pump.

If you have taken the pump to a shop that has a test stand they usually will set the advance while they test the pump.

You set the static timing at TDC. An injection pump is not like a gas ignition system. You don't set the running timing by rotating the pump. You set it to TDC static timing by rotating the pump. To set the running timing you adjust the internal pump pressure that rotates the cam ring advance. This is what you measure with the temporary clear timing window.
The timing window is Stanadyne # They usually are less than ten dollars.

I would pull the injectors an take them and the injection pump to a pump repair shop not a JD dealer. The dealer is going to send it to some else to repair and set. So why pay a markup to him.

You really need to get a service manual or you are going to scrap your pump. Email me if you want to talk. I will email ph#

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to JDseller,

I have the I&T service manual. It says 's are timed at TDC and 's at 14 deg before TDC. There is a Stanadyne shop near me where I plan to take the pump. Thanks for the advice to take the injectors there too.

That IT service manual is not correct on the timing. They are talking about the very early JD s. I have never seen one in person. The pumps they are talking about do not have the external adjustment for the pump timing. I think they all would have been models. All of the JD s I have done have had the external adjustment. I own one that I just did the pump in last fall. I timed it TDC and then set the advance on the pump while running.

To make sure ask your injection repair shop how to do the dead/static timing on your pump. You could have the real old pump but I think that most of them where replaced under warranty. They had other issues with them.

A word of warning. IT service manuals are not always correct. I have them but I kind of take what they say with a grain of salt. They do show how to make some of your own tools and such but on the real important stuff I go with JD factory manuals.

The picture is of a JD and JD I own. They both where bought by my Grand Dad new.

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to JDseller,

funny, I have almost the exact same pair, a and I put a wide front on the some years back though. Good looking brothers.

Northvale - PA

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to JDseller,

I'll take a picture of it and post it. One thing I am confused on is before I pulled it, I checked the timing, which was at 5 deg before TDC. I assume it was timed wrong to begin with, apparently?

JDseller

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to Northvale - PA,
It does not take much movement of the crankshaft to be 5 degrees out. I have seen them that much or more if the mounting bolts came loose. Then some one just tightens them to keep it from leaking oil.

Poat a picture and I will try to help.

Re: injector pump (cont'd) in reply to Northvale - PA,

Have him walk you through it , you will both be happier. Better yet , give him a little $ on the side if'n he will follow you home some day after work and do it for you if he will. That way if there is a problem with it running etc , he won't blame you for immproper install.
