This soccer turning drill for kids is a fun game based on the cartoon Tom and Jerry. This drill is great for helping young players practice their favorite turn and dribbling at speed whilst being chased by their teammates in a classic game of cat and mouse!

Tom And Jerry Game

Set Up The Drill

Set up a 20×20 yard grid using small cones. Split players up into pairs and have enough balls for one between two.

Instructions

Split the players up into pairs and designate one player to be the cat (Tom) and one player to be the mouse (Jerry) in each group. Tell the players that the ball represents a big lump of smelly cheese! Next, have each ‘Tom’ stand at one side of the grid with their back to the cheese which is placed behind them. Each corresponding ‘Jerry’ should stand at the other side of the grid directly in line with their partner.

Upon the coach’s call, all the Jerry’s must sneak up on their Tom’s as quietly as they can to try and steal the cheese. Explain to the players that to do this they must put their foot on the ball whilst gently tapping Tom on the shoulder.

Once Tom is tapped on the shoulder the race begins; Jerry must roll the ball back (thus completing a drag back turn) and race back to the opposite end of the grid. Tom must try and steal the ball back before Jerry gets back to their original spot safely. Play the game 3 times before switching roles and see who can get the most wins!

Progression

Play the same game but have players do the inside or outside hook to steal the cheese.

Coaching Points

  • Correct execution of the drag back turn, the inside hook and the outside hook.
  • Have good acceleration after the turn to escape pressure.
  • When running with the ball take bigger touches and make longer strides to try and cover the ground quickly.

Top Tip:

To manage a discrepancy in player ability, have stronger players use their weaker foot to execute the turns!

Fun Drills For Kids - U5, U6, U7, U8 - Football/Soccer Enjoyment \u0026 Improvement 2021

To make the most out of your JUST RUN session and to increase physical activity, have the children run in place while waiting for their turns.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT parts of the JUST RUN program are the recommended drills and relays for children. The drill packages have been developed to best prepare young legs and bodies for running. They are fun to do and improve agility, balance, coordination, strength, and conditioning and are the perfect complement to JUST RUNNING for school age children.

A video demonstration is found in the section "Informational and Training Videos" on the website.

It is best to organize lines of 4 or 5 children for relays. Instruct them to run easy or have them run fast to compete against each other. We suggest having them run slowly and non-competitively until they understand all of the variations. Try to evenly BALANCE the teams so they finish approximately at the same time.

Important note:The relays and drills are preferably done using soccer balls that are LOW ON AIR and FLAT on one side. They will not roll away and are not as subject to injury if stepped on.

We find that children love stuffed animals to go around and over, as well as soccer balls and/or objects of your choice. This adds VARIETY AND FUN. These relays are best done on grass rather than cement or hard surfaces.

RELAYS
Place several soccer balls - one for each group of children - 30 yards away from the starting line of the children. Each child runs to the ball, around it and then back to the group - TAGS the next person - who then does the same until all on the team have run. Variations should be done by having them first run around the ball from the left, then from the right side. Do this typically 4 times - twice from the left, twice from the right.

VariationEach child starts from a KNEELING position, first on the right knee, then on the left knee. Repeat 4 times, twice on the left knee and twice on the right.

VariationLeaders of the lines start by LYINGON THEIR BACKS, heads facing the balls. When hands are tapped, they turn over and then start running. For variety, have the children roll to the right or to the left, according to instructions.

Variation: Set a ball out about 30 yards from each line of children and a SECOND BALL or animal at 60 yards. Have the children do activities around or over each object before returning and tagging the next in line. This adds distance to the drills and relays.

DRILLS
The drills begin with a straight line of children; they individually run over and around a line of evenly separated soccer balls, or objects, and then return to the end of the line. Begin with six selected items and work up to 15 over a period of several weeks.

DRILL1: The balls should be less than three feet apart.  Children run over the balls quickly, one at a time, in a running motion.  When finished, they go back to the end of the line. Repeat.

DRILL2: The balls should be about two feet apart. Children jump over the balls with legs together.  Moving the arms helps with momentum. When finished they go back to the end of the line. Repeat.

DRILL3: The balls should be about three feet apart. Children swerve through and around the balls.  When finished, they return to the end of the line. Repeat.

DRILL4: High Knees - The balls should be about three feet apart. Children bound over the balls with alternating legs, lifting knees as high as possible. Repeat.

SUPPLEMENT drills 1 - 4 by doing push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, etc. between drills. Also, have the children run around the field, track or designated distance between drills, to add endurance.

On ALL of these drills and relays, it is important that there is not much rest time between running and activity. They need to be moving as much as possible.  However, encourage cheering, team spirit and cooperation while waiting for their turns.

Soccer cat and drill mouse

How our Cat ‘N’ Mouse drill will get you dribbling like Neymar and Lionel Messi

Whether it’s Diego Maradona carving through England in ’86, Ryan Giggs breaking Arsenal hearts in ’99 or Lionel Messi, well, take your pick, the history of football is potted with defining dribbles.

But how can you improve your technique when it comes to running the ball, without slaving away for hours on end? We’ve got just the trick, and it only takes eight cones, two footballs and a mate.

Here’s the five simple steps of Cat ‘N’ Mouse. The aim of the game is simple, either catch your mate or force them into a mistake.

1 Start on opposite sides with a ball

Lay out cones in a diamond shape, with two cones at each point acting as a gate to dribble through.

Be sensible, if you lay out too big a diamond no one will end up getting caught, defeating the purpose of the game.

Start on opposite sides of the diamond, each with a ball, preparing to go either clockwise or counterclockwise.

2 On your marks, get set, go

Both players set off at the same time.

Concentrate on hitting each gate, getting your technique right and dealing with the pressure of having someone chasing you.

The idea is to get it as close to what it’s like to have the pressure of a defender trying to tackle you.

3 High intensity is the key

The game goes on until one player catches another or someone dribbles out of play.

By not putting a time limit on the game you will improve anaerobic fitness.

These short, high intensity sprints with the ball mimic in-game situations.

4 How do you make it harder?

Think you’ve mastered the art of dribbling at pace?

Take it to the next level by only using the soles of your feet to dribble, keeping your body in a more square position.

This will improve your ability to get out of tight situations and feint, as someone like Riyad Mahrez does so well.

5 Now you’re just showing off

Introduce kick-ups if you and your mate want to show off a bit.

But be warned, hitting the gates at top speed when also trying to keep the ball up is no easy feat.

Master this art and you’ll be reaching Ronaldinho levels of technique.

WATCH: Here’s the drill in all its glory

Her long legs were tightly pressed against me, and I saw her bright feet. She moved gracefully, only with the effort of her hips. It was luxurious.

Similar news:

In such a dense forest, we moved very slowly, I really thought that we would have to spend the night here. But after a couple of hours, the area changed dramatically again. The trees seemed to have parted, the vegetation diminished, and the rays of light finally began to freely penetrate to the surface. Its like we walked through a wall, I said, breathing in the fresh air with relief.

Yes, there are similar strips of very dense forest here, Teira replied.
