How to Replace the Rope on a Stihl MS290 Chainsaw

By Keith Dooley

Access the starter rope by removing the fan housing.

The Stihl MS290, also known as the Farm Boss, is a medium duty saw suitable for use by homeowners, farmers and professionals alike. The MS290 features a 2-cycle engine with a pull start for cranking. When the pull start rope becomes worn or breaks, replacing it is essential so the chainsaw can be started. Instead of taking the saw in for service, replace the rope at home.

Remove the boot on the end of the spark plug wire from the tip of the spark plug for safety. Put on gloves, based on personal preference, to protect your hands while working.

Remove the screws holding the fan housing in place on the right side of the Stihl chainsaw. Set the screws aside for use later. Turn the fan housing sideways and remove from the chainsaw.

Turn the fan housing over to access the rewind pulley. Pull the spring clip from the starter post with a pair of pliers. Remove the washer and pawl from the starter post. Set all parts aside for use later. Remove the rotor, or pulley, from the starter post.

Hold the starter cord handle and pry the small round cap off the top with a screwdriver. Untie the knot in the end of the rope, and pull the rope down and out of the handle. Remove any of the old rope remaining on the pulley.

Obtain a suitable replacement starter rope from a hardware store, home improvement store or small engine repair shop. Tie an overhand knot in one end of the new rope. Push the end of the starter rope without the knot down through the handle. Pull the knot into the recess in the top of the handle and put the cap back on the starter handle.

Push the free end of the rope through the hole in the fan housing and the hole in the pulley. Tie another overhand knot in the rope to secure it in place. Place the pulley back onto the starter post and turn it back and forth to engage the rewind spring. Fit the pawl, washer and spring clip back onto the starter post. Position the spring clip so the bend in the clip points clockwise.

Turn the pulley clockwise six turns to tension the rewind spring. Grip the starter handle firmly. Release the pulley and allow the rope to coil on the pulley. Fit the fan housing back on the chainsaw and secure with the screws that were removed earlier.

Warnings

  • Do not over tension the rewind spring. The pulley should rotate at least one-half turn when the rope is fully extended. If not, remove one loop of rope from the pulley to prevent damage to the rewind spring.
  • Use caution when removing the pulley. The rewind spring is under tension and has sharp edges.
