14th annual Retirement Ceremony - The Class of 2020!
By USTA rule, standardbred racehorses must hang up their bridles at the conclusion of their 14-year-old season, and for the past 14-years Scarborough Downs has been proud to bring them back in front of the stands one final time to parade in front of their adoring fans. This year's class included Dr C's Z Tam, Jeannies Luck, Luigi, May Day Jo Jo, Neutral Court, Or, Power Off, Royal Hawaii, Sandy Barbie Legacy, Wake, and Wolf's Milan. After a tough week of severe weather and almost complete power outages throughout southern Maine, Bruce Ranger provided the spark of enthusiasm as live harness racing resumed at Scarborough Downs on Sunday (10/20). Currently seated as the 2nd leading driver at the Downs, Ranger visited the winner's circle four times on Sunday to help cement his lofty status on the leaders' board. Fashion Ruffles in Photo Finish Farewell!
Fashion Ruffles proved to be the best on Sunday (10/13), winning by a scant nose in the tightest of photos as a stampede of five horses were separated by less than one length at the wire! The win was one of three on the day for driver David Ingraham who concluded his summer residency at the Downs on Sunday; he and his wife, Kelly Case, will be heading back down to Pompano Park to begin their customary Florida campaign in just a few days. All good things come to those who wait but in the case of a mare named Reagan's Conquest, the waiting lasted for over six years! This 10-year-old veteran pacer tasted victory on Saturday (8/17) for the first time since May of 2013 - and to make the win even sweeter - she did it in a brand new career best 1:58 clocking! Weather Forces Cancellation of Opening Weekend
Saturday and Sunday's live harness racing cards have been cancelled at Scarborough Downs. Track management and representatives of the Maine Harness Horseman's Association both concur that incoming weather coupled with the winter thaw have combined to create adverse track conditions, necesitating the postponment of the Opening Weekend of Maine's harness racing season. Racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday April 6th with a 12:30 pm post time.
Closing Day - The Matty Ice Way!
Matty Athearn puncutated a breakthough season on Sunday (12/9), scoring four wins on the Closing Day program, while cementing his status as the third leading driver at the Downs during the 2018 meet. Here, he brings the curtain down on the season with a picture perfect gate-to-wire score behind the Plainridge invading, Jefferson Tare, to close out the year in Grand Slam Style!

Matthew Athearn, a member of Maine's much ballyhooed "Young Guns" driving colony, continues to make a name for himself just about every time he steps out on the raceway. Sunday Card Canceled at Scarborough Downs
Due to the effects of this weekend’s winter storm, Sunday’s (11/25) harness racing card and Standardbred Retirement Ceremony were canceled at Scarborough Downs.
Racing is scheduled to resume on Thursday with a 12:15 pm (EST) post time. A decision will be forthcoming regarding rescheduling the Retirement Ceremony.
Muscana in the Mud - Ranger Reigns Supreme!
Bruce Ranger ran roughshod over the competition on Saturday (11/24), scoring 5 wins on the 10 race program, as the state of Maine native proved masterful in the mud! Kevin Switzer, Jr proved to be the master of the raceway on Sunday (11/18), winning five of the ten races programmed as wintry conditions continued to hold sway here in southern Maine. Switzer, who only returned to driving at the Downs just five weeks ago, has now won 24 races since launching his comeback - Already edging his way into the top ten on the seasonal Leader's Board! Maine Amateur Driving Club - Fun to the Finish!
The pro-drivers had a field day on Thursday (11/15) as Bruce Ranger won three, and Dan Deslandes and Kevin Switzer, Jr each won two, but it was Kevin Pillsbury who took top honors in the weekly Maine Amateur Driving Club event, steering a determined course behind Color Palette K to seal the deal in the popular series. The club gives a wide assortment of non A-List drivers an opportunity to compete without locking horns with the name-brand teamsters - And they always put on an amazing show! Bruce Ranger held the hot hand on a chilly November afternoon, scoring two wins on the Sunday (11/11) program, including this maiden breaking effort behind the Maine-bred, Chief Pale Face. Ranger, who is on the comeback trail as a driver, had spent decades plying his trade in the Florida sunshine at Pompano Park, but apparently the state-of-Maine native can still deal with a bit of a nip in the air too! A friendly game of Family Feud was played during the third race on Saturday (11/10) as Nick Graffam tracked down his cousin Bruce Ranger at the wire with Cyclone Pass, a Maine-bred who just happens to be trained by Nick's Dad, Mike Graffam! Cyclone Pass paid a hefty $46.40 win ticket while securing the 20th win of his career, and the cousins combined to key an outstanding $222.00 Exacta return! Cab Bearnaise and Steven Wilson - The Sweet Taste of Victory!
Cab Bearnaise feasted on the competition Sunday (10/28), cutting the mile with determination, before perservering in a jam packed photo which saw 6 horses finish within 1-1/2 lenghts of each other! The win marked the 9th career score for rookie driver Steven Wilson - his first at Scarborough Downs - as we welcome the newest member of Maine's "Young Guns Club" The win also marked one of the few times that the veteran Drew Campbell did not visit the Winner's Circle this week, as the meet's top stick continued his mastery of the colony, winning 9 of the 19 races carded this weekend! Driving Doubles were the order of the day at Scarborough Downs on Sunday (10/21) with Heath Campbell, Kevin Switzer, Jr and Bruce Ranger all claiming two wins apiece on the afternoon card. Most auspicious was Campbell's score with the Aaron Hall trained Dragon Den in the 2nd race though, as Aaron and his new bride Josie secured their very first stable win since tying the knot just one day earlier on Saturday! Its been a long and fun season here at the Downs this year, but through all the excitement, all summer long, one thing has remained constant - Kid CourageousLOVES to win races! The 14-year-old veteran kicked off his season with a 1:56.1 win on the March 31st Opening Day card and then duplicated the feat with another 1:56.1 score on our summer season Closing Day program! Saturday's (9/15) win was his 8th of the season and the 63rd of his career, and with 3-1/2 months left before his mandatory retirement, we've got a feeling he'll rack up a few more! Distance Racing made a triumphant return to Scarborough Downs on Sunday (7/29) with the day's first two races stacked with 10 horses each and carded at a distance of 1-1/4 miles! Invinctus Hanover (Drew Campbell) won the first timed in 2:30.2 while Cherokee Ranger (Mitchell Cushing) won the second timed in 2:27.1 thereby establishing a new 1-1/4 track record, erasing the standard established way back in 1989 by the immortal Trusty Star and driver Bobby Sumner! Bobby Gray Memorial
A large contingent of family and friends gathered in the Scarborough Downs winners circle on Sunday (6/17) to honor the memory of the popular state of Maine horseman, Bobby Gray, who passed away unexpectedly while tending to his horses at Saratoga Raceway last week. The memorial was won by the 14-year-old veteran racehorse, Malek Hanover with driver Bo Sowers at the helm during a Maine Amateur Driving Club event; fittingly as Bobby was a member and regular participant in the club during his tenure at Scarborough Downs. Ride Of A Lifetime won the $6000 Free For All Trot on Saturday (6/2) in only his second start of the season! Air Force Grad has now won 4 straight races at Scarborough Downs this year and remarkably has done so with 4 different drivers teaming him home! Owner/trainer Charlene Cushing took her turn in the sulky on Sunday (5/13), and fittingly (as the only woman and only mother driving on the card) earned top honors at the raceway on Mother's Day!Cushing, who just this month graduated from college, couldn't have been any prouder of her beautiful gray, and while she'll soon be putting her recently earned degree to work by launching a new career as a Registered Nurse, she vows that she'll still make time to Get Back to the Track! The sun made a dramatically brilliant appearance midway through our first 4:30 twilight card of the 2018 season, but the spotlight continued to shine brightest on driver Drew Campbell who teamed three winners home on Saturday (5/12). He scored fast-class wins with JJ's Jet (1:56.2) and Flight Deck N (1:56.3) sandwiched around a comparatively pedestrian 1:58.1 clocking behind Wishing You Well (pictured above), but at the close of day it was once again Campbell riding off into the sunset as the lead story at the Downs! Last weekend Campbell put together back-to-back grand slam performances while bringing 8 winners down Victory Lane and this weekend he did the deed one better by winning five races in front of the HUGE Kentucky Derby Day crowd on Saturday and then adding four more tallies to close out the week on Sunday afternoon! The 2017 season came to it's conclusion on Sunday (12/10) with over $43K in purse money up for grabs and hotly contested for over an outstanding ten race program! Drew Campbell brought the curtain down on the year in grand style, winning two races on the card including the season's finale with Gordon Du Bois' trotter, Just The Right Touch. Drew exited the winner's circle after the last bugle had sounded as the undisputed Leading Driver at the Downs, boasting an impressive 173 wins at the track this year - Nearly triple the tally of his closest competitor! What a season it was for all of us at the Downs and we're already planning on doing it up even better in 2018! 2017 Standardbred Retirement Ceremony
For the 11th consecutive season, a special retirement ceremony was held at Scarborough Downs to celebrate the careers of the grand 14-year-olds who have graced our racetrack over the years. This year, 12 such veteran campaigners were feted, including Ariel, Art's Sake, Chilli NZ, Cactus Creek, Corky Baran, Devil's Embrace N, Dreamluck, Fulla Fire, Keystone Stately, Longshaw Hanover, Mcpfast Bluegrass and Super Sydney C. Combined, this grouping has won 466 races and earned over $3.8-million during their careers, while providing countless thrills to their owners, drivers, trainers and grooms. Today, they reclaimed the limelight while visiting the winner's circle one final time to the delight and applause of their adoring fans. Caviart Caterina trucked in from Plainridge Park on Sunday (10/29), intent on matching strides with Scarborough's best fillies and mares in the $7500 Free-For-All distaff event. When the dust had settled, the big city import had easily scored an open-length domination over the home town girls, stopping the clock in 1:55.1, easily registering the zippiest mile of the weekend at the Downs. The 5-year-old miss notched her 14th win of the season with Walter Case, Jr calling the shots from the sulky, all while passing the $100K level in seasonal earnings just for good measure! It was shades of the Rochester Fair on Saturday at the Downs as the 2nd raced featured a fierce competition between two Granite State harness drivers. Paul Battis of Dover, NH (outside) and John Nason of Freedom, NH (inside) perfectly matched strides during the entire first half of the race with Nason's Rhythmic Moves finishing 3rd while Battis' Im A King followed in fourth! Wishing You Well and driver Drew Campbell took full advantage of ideal weather and track conditions on Sunday (6/11) to post the fastest mile recorded yet this year! But not only did the 1:54.1 clocking top the seasonal charts, it also nearly toppled one of the oldest divisional track records on the books at The Downs! Small stables may not get the headlines that the big and powerful ones do, but for decades they have been the lifeblood of the harness racing industry, and when they are successful it's a justifiable cause for celebration. A perfect example was on display at the Downs on Sunday (6/4) as trainer Lindsay Smith, sent both members of her two horse roster to the post, quickly to be rewarded with her first two wins of the season!
