"For drivers in single-minded pursuit of straight-line speed, the Stinger GT does not disappoint. The Stinger has mastered straight-line speed and the last version we tested returned solid numbers during our track testing.” - Car and Driver

"With either engine, the Stinger is a true sports sedan (although the sedan part is arguable). There’s poise and grip, both of which are amplified by all-wheel drive and the GT2’s adaptive suspension. Yet it can also handle commutes and long trips with comfort and serenity."-- Market Watch

Kia Stinger Exterior

What’s New for

The Kia Stinger is thoroughly revised for Outside, you’ll find subtle styling tweaks that make a gorgeous car look even better. Inside, material quality has improved, moving the Kia Stinger upmarket in a way that is sure to frustrate some of its German competition. Adjustable ambient lighting is also new, as well as a larger inch center touchscreen with navigation.

The big news, however, is under the hood. The Stinger’s base engine is a new liter turbocharged four-cylinder, good for an impressive horsepower and lb/ft of torque. That’s good for a second time. Kia engineers didn’t ignore the larger liter twin-turbo V6 – a new variable exhaust system bumps horsepower up to

Kia Stinger Exterior Styling

Bold Styling

Longer and wider than a BMW 4 Gran Coupe and with a longer wheelbase than the Lexus GS -- the Kia Stinger offers the perfect blend of elegance and athleticism. Turn your attention to the rear and you'll notice quad oval exhaust pipes which provide a muscular tone as you step on the accelerator. Its wide front and rear track combined with recessed contours along the doors highlight the commanding stance of the Kia Stinger. Enhanced aerodynamics are a result of functional air intakes and curtains at the front, a smooth underbody, and a rear diffuser found on Stinger GT models. Complex LED headlamps accent the signature Kia "tiger-nose" grille at the front of the Stinger.

Kia Stinger Twin-Turbo Engine

Blistering Performance

Get your adrenaline pumping with your choice of a standard liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with horsepower or an optional liter twin-turbo V6 which cranks out horsepower with a governed top speed of MPH. Offering more power than the Audi S5 Sportback, BMW i Gran Coupe, and Infiniti Q50 -- the Stinger is ready to take on the competition. The Stinger GT offers an impressive acceleration time of only seconds -- faster than a six-cylinder Porsche Panamera.

As the first Kia sedan offered with rear- or all-wheel drive, the Stinger can excel in any type of climate. Featuring a new Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control system which monitors driver inputs and automatically applies power and braking force accordingly, the AWD system on the Stinger is rear-wheel biased for optimal control in the wet or dry. Standard high-performance Brembo® disc brakes featuring quad-piston front calipers and dual-piston rear calipers provide superior stopping power.

Kia's big sports sedan—the Stinger—aims high to challenge the automotive elites from Europe, and nearly pulls it off. When compared with rivals such as the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe, the Stinger offers a very similarly premium look and feel as well as lots of driving verve, making it a great option for enthusiasts on a budget. It shares its underpinnings with the impressive Genesis G70 sedan, but the Stinger disguises its roomier interior, larger cargo hold, and hatchback liftgate with a sexy fastback roofline. A pair of turbocharged engines are offered: a hp turbocharged liter four-cylinder is standard and a gutsy hp twin-turbo V-6 is available. Rear-wheel drive is standard but all-wheel drive is also available for those who want it.

What's New for ?

In addition to several styling updates, the Stinger looks to replace the standard hp turbo liter four-cylinder with a more powerful liter turbo-four. The new engine makes a stout horsepower. Not to be left out, the optional twin-turbo liter V-6 receives a slight power boost from hp to thanks to a new variable exhaust system. Styling improvements include updated exterior lighting elements, new wheel designs, and larger exhaust tips. Inside, the Stinger receives upgraded materials throughout, new metallic trim pieces, adjustable ambient lighting, and a larger optional inch infotainment display.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Even though the GT-Line has the looks of the V-6 models, we'd still go with one of the higher-powered models. Of those, the GT1 is the one to get. It keeps its price below the $50, mark but adds a sunroof, navigation, an inch infotainment display, Harman/Kardon audio, automatic high-beam headlamps, a power-adjustable steering column, ventilated front seats, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a driver-attention monitor.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Stinger is available with two different turbocharged engines, a new hp liter turbo-four as well as a hp twin-turbo liter V We haven't tested the new engine, but the V-6 delivers scintillating performance that gets our enthusiast blood pumping. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which, in our experiences, delivers quick shifts and is unobtrusive when left to shift for itself. We wish the paddle shifters offered sharper responses to driver inputs, however. Still, for drivers in single-minded pursuit of straight-line speed, the V-6–powered Stinger GT does not disappoint. The Stinger GT has mastered straight-line speed and sprinted to 60 mph in seconds during our track testing. It comports itself well in normal driving, but when pushed to the limit, it couldn't quite match the composure of its more established competition. Likewise, we identified some protestations from the rear suspension—an unnerving side step when cornering hard on a bumpy road—while some fore-and-aft pitching accompanied our all-out acceleration and braking runs. All GTs feature powerful Brembo brakes, which provided quick stops by any measure and fit in nicely within this class of high-performing sedans. Without the Brembos and rolling on less grippy all-season tires, the Stinger is less impressive—in this class or any other.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The rear-drive, four-cylinder Stinger has the highest estimated fuel economy, with EPA ratings of 22 mpg city and 32 highway. Naturally, the more powerful V-6 engine is less efficient, especially with all-wheel drive, which drops its estimates to 17 mpg city and 24 highway. While we haven't tested the new liter turbo-four on our mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, the all-wheel-drive, V-6 model we evaluated returned 26 mpg in that test. For more information about the Stinger's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Stinger's interior is well designed and attractive, but it can't quite match the Audi A4 or the BMW 3-series for material quality or construction. Then again, the Kia costs considerably less than those two German sedans. The Stinger does, however, offer a significantly more comfortable rear seat than many cars in this class—and its advantage feels greater than its numbers would suggest. While the Stinger's interior is free of glaring errors and omissions, the overall effect is less polished than the efforts we've enjoyed from established luxury brands. The Stinger's stated trunk volume would predict that it has by far the most cargo space in this set, but it only bested its rivals by a small margin in our real-world cargo tests. With its wide hatchback opening and long wheelbase, we'd hoped the Stinger would do even better in these measurements. Its center console is on the large side for a car, which helps to compensate for the fact that the front-door pockets are the smallest of this bunch.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Kia's infotainment system—called UVO—is used to good effect in the Stinger and consists of an or inch touchscreen mixed with useful physical buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a six-speaker stereo system. Audiophiles can upgrade to a speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system, and Kia offers a host of other tech upgrades as well, such as a wireless smartphone charging pad and in-dash navigation.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Stinger offers nearly every driver assist that we report on available as an option. For more information about the Stinger's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Kia's long powertrain warranty is practically legendary, and it easily outdoes every other car in this set for length of coverage. Unlike many of its premium-branded rivals, the Stinger offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers five years or 60, miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or , miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

The Kia Stinger (Korean: 기아 스팅어) is a mid-sizeliftback manufactured by Kia since [5]

The Stinger traces its roots to the GT Concept from the Frankfurt Auto Show and the Kia GT4 Stinger from the North American International Auto Show.[5] Designed by Peter Schreyer and Gregory Guillaume (Kia's Chief Designer[7]) at Kia's European studio in Frankfurt and engineered by former BMW M Vice President of Engineering Albert Biermann, the car was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show. Biermann is now the executive vice president of performance development and high performance vehicles of the Hyundai Motor Group.[8]

Testing of the car involved over 1, kilometres (&#;mi) at the Korea International Circuit and 10, kilometres (6,&#;mi) at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.[4][5][9]

  • Kia Stinger (Europe; pre-facelift)

The Stinger uses a shortened version of the Hyundai Genesis' front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform with additional steel reinforcement and is offered with a choice of two engines: a liter turbochargedfour-cylinder that produces &#;kW (&#;PS; &#;hp); and a 3,&#;cc (&#;L; &#;cu&#;in) twin-turboV6 engine that generates &#;kW (&#;PS; &#;hp) at 6, rpm and &#;N⋅m (&#;lbf⋅ft) of torque from 1,, rpm for the AWD variant.[5] For the European and Korean markets, the Stinger is offered with a base liter CRDidiesel I4 that produces &#;kW (&#;PS; &#;hp).[6] GT variants are equipped with Brembo brakes and Michelin tires.[5][6][9] The sole transmission is an 8-speed automatic with five driving modes plus paddle-shifters.[4]

Kia claims that the Stinger accelerates from &#;km/h (62&#;mph) in , 6 and seconds respectively. Schreyer reportedly drove a pre-production Stinger GT at a top speed of &#;km/h (&#;mph) on the Autobahn.[4]

During a test by Car and Driver, an all-wheel-drive U.S. spec GT T with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires achieved 0–60&#;mph (0–97&#;km/h) in seconds on the track, reached g on the skidpad and was able to stop from 70&#;mph (&#;km/h) in feet (50&#;m). According to this publication, the U.S. model's top speed is governed at &#;mph (&#;km/h) per Kia specs.[10] In tests conducted by Motor Trend, the four-cylinder U.S. spec Stinger RWD on Bridgestone Potenza tires reached 60&#;mph (97&#;km/h) in seconds, completed the 1&#;4-mile (&#;km) run in 15 seconds and stopped from 60&#;mph (97&#;km/h) in feet (38&#;m). The average lateral acceleration recorded in track testing was g.[11][12]

In August , Kia unveiled a refreshed Stinger that went on sale in South Korea on the third quarter of and worldwide by the end of year. Styling updates include revised headlights and taillights, a new inch infotainment screen and an additional wheel design. Kia also added an optional litre Smartstream FR G T-GDi engine producing &#;PS (&#;kW; &#;hp) as well as a variable exhaust to the existing litre Lambda II RS T-GDi that increases the power by 3&#;PS (&#;kW; &#;hp).

The Kia Stinger was updated for the British market on 6 January ,[13] while the North American model was updated on 16 March ,[14] making it one of the first cars to bear the new Kia logo in said region, alongside the Carnival. The Mexican model later arrived on 3 May , also sporting the new Kia logo.[15]

Kia Stinger Expert Review

Zach Gale

Kia is strengthening the Stinger lineup for the model year. Newly updated, the Kia Stinger aims to attract luxury-minded sport sedan buyers with key updates designed to improve its style and fun-to-drive nature. Here's what to expect for the Stinger hatchback.

  • Base engine replaced by a hp liter turbo-four
  • Slight power bump for the optional twin-turbo V-6
  • Standard inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • New Nappa leather seat design
  • Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot collision avoidance, and lane-keep assist are now standard
  • Tweaked exterior design

The Stinger offers a fantastic blend of usable cargo space, near-luxury appointments, knockout design, and sporty driving dynamics. Driving quickly, body movements are kept to a minimum and the vehicle consistently feels planted and composed. The steering is quick and communicative, and although RWD variants are more willing to rotate than equivalent AWD models, both offer balanced handling. This year's new turbo-four will be plenty quick for most drivers, but we appreciate the available V-6 torque monster.

That said, not all our feedback has been positive. The transmission could be more responsive when left to shift on its own and we noticed more road noise than we'd like, specially on uneven road surfaces. Likewise, some buyers will struggle to stomach the Stinger's price tag given its Kia badge, and fit and finish don't quite match the near-luxury positioning.

The Stinger enters the model year with a tweaked design that will help you tell it apart from a model, but not completely change its inherent love-it-or-hate-it design. In front, look for updated headlights. The Stinger will roll up to the valet with new wheel designs, and the taillights are lightly restyled, too.

The changes are more significant inside, where all Stingers  get a inch touchscreen, a decent upgrade from the inch touchscreen on models. Other tech includes a degree camera system and the automaker's Blind Spot View Monitor, which will project a video view of what's in your blind spot when you activate the turn signal. The image is projected in the instrument cluster's available inch info screen.

Kia is leaning into the blacked-out trend with the Stinger Scorpion Special Edition. Arriving late in the spring, this limited-edition Stinger includes black exterior trim (including darkened exhaust tips) as well as black wheels.

Inside, The Stinger Scorpion has carbon fiber-like trim. A rear spoiler is also part of the package, which is offered in the exterior colors of Aurora Black, Snow White, and Ceramic Silver.

When it comes to the Genesis G70 and Kia Stinger, we've always liked the liter twin-turbo V-6 more than the now-discontinued liter turbo-four, which struck us as adequate but not quite up to the standards set by class leaders. Turbo fours available on the Audi A4 and Alfa Romeo Giulia feel especially powerful from behind the wheel. For the model year, Kia looks to address that shortcoming, with a new base engine. Those not impressed by the Stinger's hp four-cylinder can look forward to the model's hp liter turbo-four.

If the turbocharged I-4 and its Kia-estimated second sprint to 60 mph isn't enough—or if you've just gotta have the sound of a V-6, the liter twin-turbo V-6 enters with updates, too. Models with the V-6 now have hp and lb-ft of torque (3 hp more than last year). As with the four-cylinder engine, the six is mated to an eight-speed automatic. Kia estimates the six-cylinder Stinger will hit 60 in only seconds. In MotorTrend testing, our one-year Stinger already reached 60 in seconds, so we believe it.

EPA-rated efficiency comes in at 22/32 mpg city/highway for the T engine, a slight improvement over the Stinger T's 22/29 mpg. With the T and AWD, those numbers drop to 21/29, matching last year's less powerful T-AWD model. Go for the liter turbocharged V-6 and you can expect 18/25 mpg with RWD and 17/24 with AWD.

The Kia Stinger performs well in safety testing. In NHTSA evaluations, the Stinger is a five-star overall performer, with a four-star score in the frontal crash test as well as a five-star rating in side and rollover tests. The IIHS has tested the Stinger as well, and it earns a Top Safety Pick+.

Standard safety features on the Stinger include automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance system. The Kia also offers a Safe Exit Warning system that can warn the driver or passenger they might want to wait before opening their door, if oncoming traffic is detected. A rear cross-traffic alert system with braking is also offered; it's helpful technology when you find yourself reversing from a parking space between two towering SUVs.
