ThinkPad P50 here, my situation was similar to everyone else's until today, now it's a bit different.
Normally the same IME update would show, it looked like it would install but would not (verified in the BIOS) and still always show as being an available update.

I decided to try and do the firmware upgrade in Windows, which I no longer had installed. Installing that was an adventure in finding out that I had to make sure none of my Linux partitions (on my two internal NVMe SSDs) weren't present, so I removed them and successfully installed W I ran all the updates, ran all the Lenovo Commercial Vantage updates to eek out the IME update. It installed it successfully as verified in the BIOS (version now, newer than what's available in LVFS).

But now the same update still shows as being available via fwupdmgr and trying to update that (I have rollbacks enabled, nothing is restricted in the BIOS) and it will download, reboot but immediately boot to systemd-boot and boot normally. fwupdmgr still shows the update being available, I'm guessing because isn't in LVFS yet and it has a different versioning scheme.

EDIT: fwupdmgr also reports I still have version installed, which I know for a fact is false.

If any other information could be useful, please let me know. Hoping my situation helps out the BIOS devs.

Intel&#;s Management Engine is a security hazard, and users need a way to disable it

Intel’s CPUs have another Intel inside.

Since , most of Intel’s chipsets have contained a tiny homunculus computer called the “Management Engine” (ME). The ME is a largely undocumented master controller for your CPU: it works with system firmware during boot and has direct access to system memory, the screen, keyboard, and network. All of the code inside the ME is secret, signed, and tightly controlled by Intel. Last week, vulnerabilities in the Active Management (AMT) module in some Management Engines have caused lots of machines with Intel CPUs to be disastrously vulnerable to remote and local attackers. While AMT can be disabled, there is presently no way to disable or limit the Management Engine in general. Intel urgently needs to provide one.

This post will describe the nature of the vulnerabilities (thanks to Matthew Garrett for documenting them well), and the potential for similar bugs in the future. EFF believes that Intel needs to provide a minimum level of transparency and user control of the Management Engines inside our computers, in order to prevent this cybersecurity disaster from recurring. Unless that happens, we are concerned that it may not be appropriate to use Intel CPUs in many kinds of critical infrastructure systems.

What is AMT? How is it vulnerable?

On many Intel chips, the Management Engine is shipped with the AMT module installed. It is intended to allow system administrators to remotely control the machines used by an organization and its employees. A vulnerability announced on May 1 allows an attacker to bypass password authentication for this remote management module, meaning that in many situations remote attackers can acquire the same capabilities as an organization’s IT team, if active management was enabled and provisioned.1

Once they have AMT access, attackers can interact with the screen or console as if the user were doing so themselves. Attackers can also boot arbitrary OSes, install a new OS, and (with some work) steal disk encryption passwords.2

Not every machine is susceptible to the attack. For it to work, AMT has to have been both enabled and provisioned (commonly AMT is enabled but not provisioned by default). Once provisioned, AMT has a password set, and is listening for network packets and will control the system in response to those.3 It can be provisioned by default if vendors used a feature called “Remote Configuration” with OEM Setup, by a user with administrative access, interactively or with a USB stick during system boot, or (via the LMS vulnerability) by unprivileged users on Windows systems with LMS. Macs have MEs, but don’t ship with AMT at all. The password protection is crucial for machines with AMT provisioned, but this week’s vulnerability allowed it to be bypassed.

How can users protect themselves?

Many organizations will need to take steps to protect themselves by ensuring that AMT is disabled in their BIOS and LMS is not installed, or by updating Intel firmware.
Unfortunately, even if AMT is currently disabled, that doesn’t mean an attack was never possible—an attacker might have disabled AMT after concluding the attack, to close the door on their way out.

But troublingly, AMT is only one of many services/modules that come preinstalled on Management Engines. The best recommendation we can make for addressing this vulnerability today is to disable that specific AMT module, because Intel doesn’t provide any way to generally limit the power of the ME. But vulnerabilities in any of the other modules could be as bad, if not worse, for security. Some of the other modules include hardware-based authentication code and a system for location tracking and remote wiping of laptops for anti-theft purposes. While these may be useful to some people, it should be up to hardware owners to decide if this code will be installed in their computers or not. Perhaps most alarmingly, there is also reportedly a DRM module that is actively working against the user’s interests, and should never be installed in an ME by default.

For expert users on machines without Verified Boot, a Github project called ME cleaner exists and can be used to disable a Management Engine. But be warned: using this tool has the potential to brick hardware, and interested parties should exercise caution before attempting to protect their systems. A real solution is going to require assistance from Intel.

What Intel needs to do fix this mess

Users need the freedom to choose what they want running on their system, and the ability to remove code that might contain vulnerabilities. Because the Management Engine only runs code modules signed by Intel, this means having a way to disable the ME or reflash it with minimal, auditable firmware. While Intel may put a lot of effort into hunting for security bugs, vulnerabilities will inevitably exist, and having them lurking in a highly privileged, low level component with no OS visibility or reliable logging is a nightmare for defensive cybersecurity. The design choice of putting a secretive, unmodifiable management chip in every computer was terrible, and leaving their customers exposed to these risks without an opt-out is an act of extreme irresponsibility.

What would be best for users and for the public’s ability to control machines that they have purchased would be for Intel to provide official support for reducing the attack surface to limit the potential harm of the ME.

So we call upon Intel to:

  • Provide clear documentation for the software modules that are preinstalled on various Management Engines. What HECI commands provide a full list of the installed modules/services? What are the interfaces to those services?
  • Provide a way for their customers to audit ME code for vulnerabilities. That is presently impossible because the code is kept secret.
  • Offer a supported way to disable the ME. If that’s literally impossible, users should be able to flash an absolutely minimal, community-auditable ME firmware image.
  • On systems where the ME is an essential requirement for other security features that are important to some users (like Boot Guard), offer an additional option of a near-minimal, community-auditable ME firmware image that performs these security functions, and nothing else. Or alternatively, a supported way to build and flash firmware images where the user can inspect and control which services/modules are present, in order to manage security risks from those modules.

Until Intel takes these steps, we have reason to fear that the undocumented master controller inside our Intel chips could continue to be a source of serious vulnerabilities in personal computers, servers, and critical cybersecurity and physical infrastructure. Intel needs to act quickly to provide the community with an auditable solution to these threats.

Correction Intel has contacted us with two corrections to the details of this post. (1) Management Engines are not physically located on the CPU die itself, but in other parts of Intel's chipsets; (2) the LMS-based local privilege escalation was a second consequence of the first code vulnerability, rather than a second vulnerability or bug of its own. We have accordingly edited the language of this post in a couple of places, but do not believe these updates affect its conclusions.

Firmware Update Error Recovering Intel(R) Management Engine Firmware

Ramblings

This is how I updated my Intel ME firmware on my Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 4 (reports say this also has worked for Gen5 machines). These instructions are pretty strongly inspired by https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=

Why? Intel security advisory and CVE, CVE, CVE, and CVE should be reason enough.

You will need:

  • To download about GB of stuff
  • A USB key
  • Linux installed
  • WINE or a Windows box to run two executables (because self extracting archives are a thing on Windows apparently)
  • A bit of technical know-how. A shell prompt shouldn&#;t scare you too hard.

Steps:

  1. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10ISO and download the bit ISO.
  2. Mount the ISO as a loopback device (e.g. by right clicking and choosing to mount, or by doing &#;sudo mount -o loop,ro file.iso /mnt&#;
  3. Go to Lenovo web site for Drivers & Software for your laptop, under Chipset, there&#;s ME Firmware and Software downloads You will need both. It looks like this:
  4. Run both exe files with WINE or on a windows box to extract the archives, you do not need to run the installers at the end.
  5. you now need to extract the management engine drivers. You can do this in  ~/.wine/drive_c/DRIVERS/WIN/AMT, with &#;cabextract SetupME.exe&#; or (as suggested in the comments) you can use the innoextract utility (from linux) to extract them (a quick check shows this to work)
  6. Save off HECI_REL folder, it&#;s the only extracted thing you&#;ll need.
  7. Go and install https://wimlib.net/ &#; we&#;re going to use it to create the boot disk. (it may be packaged for your distro).
If you don&#;t have the path on your system but you do have &#; you will need to change a bit of the file to point to the locations rather than before you install wimlib. This probably isn&#;t needed if you&#;re installing from packages, but may be requried if you&#;re on, say, Fedora.
  8. Copy ~/.wine/drive_c/DRIVERS to a new folder, e.g. &#;winpe_overlay&#; (or copy from the Windows box you extracted things on)
  9. Use mkwinpeimg to create the boot disk, pointing it to the mounted Windows 10 installer and the &#;winpe_overlay&#;: mkwinpeimg -W /path/to/mounted/windowsbit-installer/ -O winpe_overlay disk.img
  10. Use &#;dd&#; to write it to your USB key
  11. Reboot, go into BIOS and turn Secure Boot OFF, Legacy BIOS ON, and AMT ON.
  12. Boot off the USB disk you created.
  13. In the command prompt of the booted WinPE environment, run the following to start the update: cd \cd HECI_REL\win10
    drvload heci.inf
    cd \
    cd win\me
    MEUpdate.cmd

It should look something like this:

  14. Reboot, go back into BIOS and change your settings back to how you started.

Hello, @CarlosAM_INTEL,

Thank you for your response.

I have tried to get help from https://lenovomobilesupport.lenovo.com/us/en/contactus without any success.

There is a discussion of this problem at Lenovo forum https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-TTand-newer-T-series-Laptops/Ts-Intel-Management-En

One of participants, @keh, in the post of , AM proposed a workaround: running MEUpdate.cmd with PowerShell as admin. Many other participants successfully applied this method. However, another participant, @PostEverywhere, worried whether this method was safe for the further updates. Unfortunately, Lenovo did not weigh in on whether this workaround might cause any issues.

My laptop repeatedly shows recommendation from Lenovo to update Intel Management Engine Firmware – 10 [64] and always fails because “The FW Update Utility couldn’t identify the system’s SKU”. Therefore, the workaround looks like the only chance. However, I hesitate to apply it without an expert approval.

Thank you,

@aleko

Hi, I've read the thread here about missing ME firmware.

Like many other users, my Lenovo thinkcentre M91p is showing N/A in the column of ME firmware version.
I am not able to rewrite the firmware because communication error.

I have tried upgrade to the lastest version of BIOS but not working.

Please give me some guidance on how to fix it. Thank you.

@francisckt - Where did you get ME FW? I checked BIOS Download, does not contain ME, and they did not have ME FW listed on download page, unless I missed it.
Do you remember what your ME FW used to be before this happened? Major version is all I wonder about, was it ME7 or ME8? Then I can help you fix

Please don't send PM's for help on BIOS edits, I can't help with BIOS in PM's. Please make a thread and I will try to help as soon as I can - thanks!

Plutomaniac, I have a dump to use as settings source for ME correction, but it's in a much older than current BIOS ( dump ME vs latest BIOS).
Still safe to use that, clean/update ME, and then send out extracted ME for the fix?

@francisckt - Did you try unprovisioning AMT by disable ME it in BIOS, reboot and see if you can then re-enable ME via enter BIOS and enable AMT again and then reboot and enter MEBx (Control + P at startup, admin is the pass)

Yes, you can update it while following the guide too

Thanks, I planned to use the guide and latest ME, but wasn't sure if older source like that for settings transfer was OK or not. Now, the fun part

@francisckt - Please open the system up and see if you can find the Service Mode jumper, several articles I've read mention it has one (May be labeled CMOS_Recovery).
Please put jumper on pins instead of , and tell me if you can boot to Windows or DOS still, thanks! You may have to tell it no to recovery, or let that process go until it fails due to no file provided and then see if it will let you boot to DOS or windows.
While you look at the board, also see if you see any other 2 or 3 pin headers, if yes what labels do you see on/near them on the PCB.

@francisckt ME jumper is exactly what we need, thanks for checking! I will edit in ME and instructions for you shortly

* Edit -

Plutomaniac - No go with ME8 FITc, both versions gave the (FUSE) Configuration Size Parameter Mismatch as described in the PDF warning, and said ME8 only. I used V7 FITc, was there a specific reason you mentioned FITc 8 might work, or just in case if I could use newer tool to go ahead

@francisckt - download this Intel ME System Tools package - https://mega.nz/#!rQ9WXQYL!LfEvstS2CLKR6puRfFe7vqs60U

Inside this package you will find Flash Programming Tool folder, inside that Win32 folder.
Put a copy of the ME download below unzipped, into this Win32 folder (not added in yet, posted this edit early so I didn't loose everything I wrote out already, ME edit pending BIOS/ME investigation per PM info about ME visible in device manager) - About this, please add an image or two of what all you see in device manager
Then back out of that folder, and select the Win32 Folder, hold shift and press right click, choose "Open Command Window Here"
At the command prompt enter the following command, and leave command window open when it's finished, for next command.
FPTw.exe -me -f meupfix.bin

Once above command is done, type the following and system will reboot.
FPTw.exe -greset

Once booting again, enter BIOS, then shut down system and remove jumper on ME pins

Thanks for links, but I do not need, well I can go ahead and use I suppose. I see yellow bang, what is the error message?
Did you try unprovisioning AMT by disable ME it in BIOS, reboot and see if you can then re-enable ME via enter BIOS after that and enable AMT again and then reboot and enter MEBx (Control + P at startup, admin is the pass)
Here is more info I posted for someone else who has similar ME and issue - HECI error during MEBx execution (6) And HECI error during MEBx execution (8)

Please also see this post, and do that to reset ME State, before doing any of the above - HECI error during MEBx execution (8)
Two posts down from that is a guide for using AMT/ME/MEBx with these systems (Linked second above) not for your system but it will help you figure things out.
ME jumper must be removed to original position for ME to function, only put jumper on there to flash/update it.

I gotcha now, thanks! When you mentioned that, I took it as "Tools" FITc since we were discussing fixing the ME, didn't even consider the other tools in package yet, my bad there! We'll use FPT8 when/if it comes to that, I'll update link if needed.

@francisckt - does the above linked ME FW Tool work for you in windows, with or ME without jumper in place.
I don't think jumper needs to be in place, but if ME is messed up or corrupted that tool will not work no matter what, FPT and jumper in place will be required.
If ME is not messed up, but simply configured wrong, that tool should still update it, then you'll know it's just configured wrong.
