Tip of the Day: Lower the deck when cleaning your mower or tractor

A washout port simplifies cleaning a mower deck.

You can make your lawn mower or tractor work more effectively and extend the life of its deck by cleaning off grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the underside of the deck, preferably after each use and especially if your yard is damp when you mow. A built-in washout port (to which you attach a garden hose, as you'll see at about 3'25" into this video buying guide for tractors) makes the job even easier. Read this Tip of the Day for more details.

Peter Sawchuk, the program leader in our Tech division who specializes in testing outdoor equipment and who participated in our live chat earlier this month, has found that dropping the mower or tractor deck to its lowest setting allows water to stay within the deck longer and provide more cleaning power, resulting in better removal of grass and debris. Depending on how dirty the deck is, you could end up with a bit of a soggy mess, but it's still a job worth doing.

Clean the deck with your mower/tractor on a flat, clean surface, say on your driveway or a walkway. (Don't do it on your yard—you'll end up creating a bald spot on your lawn.) When you're done, return the deck to the regular cutting height.

DON’T WASH YOUR MOWER DECK (waste of time)

Craftsman Lawn Tractor Deck Wash Instructions

By Renee Miller

Most Craftsman brand lawn tractor decks are equipped with a washout port on the deck so you can clean the underside of the deck with a garden hose. This removes grass and debris and prevents corrosion. Lawn tractor decks should be cleaned after every use. Using the washout port ensures the water won’t damage internal components such as the electrical system, carburetor, air filter or muffler.

Park the lawn tractor on a level area of your driveway or your lawn. Make sure the deck is close enough to an outdoor faucet that a hose will easily reach from the faucet to the tractor’s washout port, which is typically located on the tractor deck.

Position the tractor so the discharge shoot is pointed away from your house, other structures and vehicles. Remove the bagger chute or mulch cover if it is still attached to the tractor.

Ensure the parking brake is engaged, the lawn tractor is off and the blades have stopped turning. Thread the nozzle adaptor, which is typically packaged with the tractor’s owner’s manual, onto the end of a garden hose.

Pull the adapter’s locking collar back and then push the adapter end of the hose onto the mower deck washout port.

Release the locking collar to lock the hose in place. Test the hose connection by pulling on it to ensure it doesn’t pop out.

Connect the other end of the hose to the closest outdoor faucet and turn on the water.

Sit on the tractor in the same position as you would to mow the grass and start the engine. Position the throttle into the “Fast” position.

Shift the clutch into the “Engaged” position and let the water run beneath the deck until it comes out clear. Remain seated on the tractor until the deck is clean and you turn off the engine.

Move the clutch back to the "Disengaged" position and turn off the tractor’s engine.

Turn the water off and remove the hose from the deck washout port.

Move your lawn tractor to a dry location and shift the clutch to the “Engaged” position. This will allow any remaining water to drain from the underside of the deck.

Allow the tractor dry completely before storing it.

Tips

  • It’s easiest to clean your lawn tractor deck right after mowing, because the clippings are still moist.

Warnings

  • Always clean the lawn tractor’s deck outdoors and read the manufacturer’s instructions for using the deck washout port prior to cleaning.

Deck hose craftsman adapter wash

How to Use the Hose Attachment on a Craftsman Lawnmower

By Melly Parker

The hose attachment works with various garden hoses.

The hose attachment for a Craftsman lawnmower is part of the mower's deck wash system. When you're done mowing, use the deck wash system to remove grass clippings, dirt and other debris from under the mowing deck. Doing so will help to keep your mower's components from clogging and help to ensure that the machine produces the best possible grass trim.

Drive your Craftsman lawnmower onto level ground near enough to an outdoor faucet that a garden hose can reach easily from the faucet to the mower. Move mower's the attachment clutch control to the "Disengaged" position, and activate the parking brake. Turn off the mower's engine.

Screw the hose attachment, also called a nozzle adapter, onto one end of the garden hose. Pull the release that is on the nozzle adapter's lock collar. Put the nozzle adapter on the deck washout port, which is on your mower's deck.

Release the lock collar, letting it go. It should hold the nozzle adapter securely in place. Check whether or not the nozzle adapter is secure by pulling on the garden hose. If the nozzle adapter is not secure when water comes through the garden hose, then it will pop out of place.

Attach the other end of the garden hose to a faucet, and turn on the water at the faucet. Sit on the lawnmower's seat, turn on the mower's engine and move the throttle to the "Fast" position. Move the attachment clutch control to the "Engaged" position. Remain sitting on the mower and letting the engine run for several minutes while water cleans the underside of the deck.

Move the attachment clutch control to the "Disengaged" position, and turn off the mower's engine. Turn off the water at the faucet. Release the lock collar on the nozzle attachment, and remove the nozzle attachment from the deck washout port.

Allow the underside of the deck to dry before you put the lawnmower indoors or cover it for storage. It's best to let it dry on a hard surface.
