Buying guide for best playard sheets

For babies, a playard is a cozy little sanctuary where they can play, relax, and hang out alongside adults. Babies spend several hours of the day engaging and interacting with a big new world, and eventually, they need some downtime. Playards are just the place for naps, so how do you make them comfortable enough for babies to get a few winks of sleep?

Playard sheets soften the space with an extra touch of comfort. They resemble tiny versions of fitted sheets, equipped with an elastic edge to provide a snug fit around the corners. Whether you’re looking for basic colors or themed sheets to match other décor, you have plenty of options.

As cozy and welcoming as playard sheets are, they’re also tough enough to hold up to plenty of use. Not only do they endure hundreds of washes, they provide an extra layer of protection on top of the playard mattress. If you’re ready to make your child’s favorite space a little more cozy with all the perks of practicality, then we invite you to review the playard sheets we recommend.

Key considerations

Mattress depth

The first thing to do when choosing playard sheets is to determine the correct measurements for your mattress. Sheets are generally designed to fit average playard mattresses, which are 27 x 39 inches. That said, some mattresses are deeper than others — they range between two and four inches. Some sheets are a universal fit for any thickness, whereas others are designed more specifically.

Like any sheets, playard sheets get a lot of use, so you should buy more than one. It’s a big help to have extras on hand when one is in the wash so your baby doesn’t miss any playard time. Some playard sheets are packaged in sets of two or three at a reasonable price, though others are sold individually. If you’re planning on buying multiple sets, consider picking up sets with different prints and designs with coordinating colors for a little bit of variety.

If you think you’ll welcome more babies into the world, you may opt for gender-neutral playard sheets. Some parents see this as an economical idea, stocking up on essentials that can be used for more than one baby. Gender-neutral colors, prints, and themes are also easy to match to other décor in the nursery, as they tend to use color palettes with neutral tones.

Avoid washing your playard sheets on high heat in your dryer. It could cause the elastic to dry out over time and eventually snap or deteriorate.

Design styles

  • Solids: Traditional playard sheets come in solid colors. Whether it’s pastels, primary colors, or simple neutrals, these are the easiest to match to décor and other accessories. Some solid sets are budget-priced since they’re considered most basic when it comes to this type of bedding.

  • Geometric: Geometric designs have risen in popularity, especially those that come in gender-neutral colors. These busy yet playful designs often come in striped, zigzag, or shape patterns. They’re also easy to coordinate with other items around the nursery or home.

  • Animals: Playard sheets with animal designs have always been well-loved. Llamas, sloths, and woodland creatures are popular and are often placed in gender-neutral color palettes.

  • Cotton: Cotton blends are the most popular material for playard sheets. They’re incredibly versatile and functional year-round, and they’re particularly lightweight and breathable during warmer months. Jersey knit is a soft, breathable weave with a bit of stretch to it, though it maintains its integrity well as a snugly fitted sheet. Organic cotton refers to cotton that has been grown with a low environmental impact without the use of toxins and certain chemicals. Cotton-poly blends are also well-liked by parents, as they’re soft and sometimes include stain-proof or spill-proof technology.

  • Plush: Plush or chenille playard sheets are thicker and warmer than cotton sheets, so they’re preferred during the colder months. Typically they’re made with a soft polyester blend that retains warmth so babies don’t get too cold while they nap. Certain plush versions have a similar feel and appearance to the fabric used for stuffed animals, giving them a somewhat velvety feel.

  • Quilted: If you’re looking for a softer, more cushioned playard sheet, consider something quilted. These sheets can be made with a combination of cotton or plush materials, and they include a thin layer of batting on the inside, providing a pillow-top feel to the playard sheet. This is certainly inviting when it comes to naptime.

  • Vinyl: Some playard sheets have a thin sheet of vinyl beneath the material upon which your baby naps. This additional protective layer is designed to catch spills and soiling so they don’t go through the sheet and soak the mattress.

Fabric features

In addition to top-quality materials, some parents prefer the safest production and treatment of the materials that make playard sheets. Some organic playard sheets may also be certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, which assesses the entire production and supply chain of cotton before it’s turned into products and sold. Besides organic, you may also find sheets that are hypoallergenic, non-GMO, nontoxic, or locally grown.

Playard sheet prices

Playard sheets cost between $5 and $40.

Inexpensive: On the low end are playard sheets between $5 and $10 each. These often come one to a pack and only occasionally feature patterns or themes.

Mid-range:Between $10 and $20 is where you get the most bang for your buck. These sheets often come two to a pack and are made with high-quality cotton that may be organic or eco-friendly.

Expensive: Playard sheets between the $20 to $40 range often come in pairs and offer an abundance of features, including what you can find in less expensive models. Many have wrinkle-free technology, a higher thread count, and the ability to repel stains.

  • Wash according to the care instructions. Playard sheets get a lot of use, so extend the amount of time they last by following their recommended care instructions.

  • Buy multiples of the same playard sheets. If you want to avoid the hassle of matching or worrying about specific sheets, an easy solution is to get plenty of the same color or pattern.

  • Choose a baby-friendly detergent. Certain laundry detergents are formulated to be safe to use on baby clothes and sheets. Consider eco-friendly, unscented, or color-free formulas, as these detergents are often safe for sensitive skin as well.

  • Throw out torn sheets. While you can easily sew tears, it’s much safer to just replace the sheets. Tears may reopen, and loose fabric in the playard is unsafe for babies.

Q. Do I need to wash my playard sheets separately from other items?

A. You can wash them with other items that have the same care instructions, especially if you’re using special products for your baby’s items. It saves time and condenses laundry loads. Some people prefer washing sheets separately, particularly if they’re soiled, to avoid transferring anything onto other items.

Q.  How often do I need to wash my playard sheets?

A. It’s recommended that you wash playard sheets two to three times a week, so it’s a good idea to have a few sets to alternate between loads. If your baby soils the sheets, remove them right away to be washed. It’s also a good idea to change them more often when your child is sick.

Q. I’m buying playard sheets as a gift, but the couple didn’t do a gender reveal. What are my options?

A. Plain white, yellow, or gray are good options for gender-neutral sheets, especially since they can be used for future siblings as well. If you’d like to have lively sheets with patterns, find geometric patterns with the aforementioned colors. You can also find neutral patterns or themes, like woodland creatures, under the sea, zoo, and jungle animals. Ask the parents whether they have specific colors in mind for the nursery, and find ones to match that.

American Baby Company Playard Sheet

American Baby Company 2 Pack % Natural Cotton Value Jersey Knit Fitted Pack N Play Playard Sheet, Gray, Soft Breathable, for Boys and Girls

My overall pick for best pack and play sheet wins this category. The American Baby Company Playard sheets are stretchy enough to fit most pack and plays, without being too stretchy that they are loose on a smaller pack and play mattresses. Please note that the bigger your pack and play mattress is, the more the sheet will have to stretch, and it does become a bit see-through because these sheets are on the thin side.

There are two brands of sheets that win this category. The first is my top pick again &#; the American Baby Company sheets. I love that they are jersey-style sheets because they are my personal favorite for myself.

The second is the Cuddly Cubs Pack and Play Sheets. They are also made of jersey cotton, leaving them super soft as well. The superelastic around the edge helps these sheets to fit 27&#; x 39&#; regular pack and play mattresses, as well as 24&#; x 38&#; mini crib mattresses. These will fit up to a 5-inch thick mattress. They fit really well on the Graco pack and play series, even though they have to stretch.

New York Pack n Play Fitted Sheet

Pack n Play Fitted Pack n Play Playard Sheet Set-2 Pack Portable Mini Crib Sheets,Playard Mattress Cover,Super Soft Material, Cute Monsters

Luxuriously Soft-New York makes a few varieties of playard sheets that are fun, soft, and not overly expensive! They also come in a two-pack, so you have a backup in case of a nighttime accident. You can pick from a few designs, ranging from girly or boyish to super neutral or just plain fun :

You really don&#;t see many fun patterned sheets for the best pack and plays. Most patterns on other sheets are pretty mild or plain in color, so if you are looking for something a bit more wild, check these out!

Luvable Friends Fitted Playard Sheet

Luvable Friends Unisex Baby Fitted Playard Sheet, Yellow Geometric, One Size

So you know how I keep raving about the American Baby Company sheets? Here&#;s one more reason: they are usually the cheapest. But we all know that prices can fluctuate, and for the sake of giving you some variety, I&#;ll talk about the Luvable Friends fitted playard sheet.

This brand is the often cheapest you can find when it comes to pack and play sheets, and it&#;s really comparable to the price of the American Baby Company ones. They come in a single pack for a reasonable price. You can choose from 3 polka dot designs- one with girly colors, one with masculine colors, and one with neutral bright colors.  They are % knit cotton, and they&#;re surprisingly soft considering the price point. One thing to note here is that these are designed to cover the mattresses that you place in pack n plays, not the cardboard support that comes with the pack n play.

Best Graco Pack and Play Sheets

Graco Pack &#;n Play Playard Sheet

Graco Pack 'n Play Playard Sheet, Grey

The Graco Pack &#;n Play Playard sheets are one of the only brands of sheets that I&#;ve run into that do not have elastic around the corners to hold the sheet in place. Instead, the fabric just wraps around the mattress, and each corner of the sheet has a sort of pocket for the corner of the mattress. I have tried these sheets and felt like they were not snug enough. You really have to tuck in all of the sides to make sure there is no loose fabric, and I found myself having to readjust them every few days. It is definitely doable &#; I used them fairly frequently despite the lack of elastic. However, I much preferred my pack and play sheets that did have elastic corners.

One thing that I do like about the Graco sheets is that you can get a quilted version of them. The quilted version adds some cushion to make the mattress a little more comfy for your baby. They also add a bit of warmth and are great for the winter months.

Best Organic Pack and Play Sheets

Burt&#;s Bees Mini Crib Sheet for Pack and Play

Burt's Bees Baby - Fitted Mini Crib Sheet for Pack 'n Play or Portable Playard, % Organic Cotton (Blossom) , 24x38 Inch (Pack of 1)

Since your baby spends hours upon hours sleeping, an organic playard sheet can be a smart choice. The Burt&#;s Bees Mini Crib Sheet for Pack and Play is made from % organic cotton jersey material that&#;s GOTS certified. This means no pesticides or icky chemicals right next to your baby as they sleep. It also means really soft sheets!

This pack n play sheet is approximately 24 inches by 38 inches and a few inches deep, so it&#;s originally designed for mini crib mattresses. However, the manufacturer claims that it will fit the standard pack n play mattress (27 inches by 39 inches) as well. And while this only comes in 3 options for the mini-crib sheet, you can purchase other sizes and colors to coordinate your baby&#;s bedding across all their sleeping surfaces.

Using Sheets on Your Pack N Play

One of the most exciting parts of getting ready for your baby&#;s arrival is setting up their nursery. Some people opt to use a Pack and Play as a crib at first because they are more compact, generally cheaper, and easier to move if necessary.  Even if you don&#;t use a Pack and Play as your baby&#;s crib at first, you may find yourself using one downstairs for naps, or for a crib when traveling.

While not necessary, having sheets for your pack and play can come in really handy. Here are some buying considerations for playard sheets.

Size of Mattress

Many pack and play mattresses are the same sizes, but some are slightly different. It is important to find sheets that fit snugly, but not too snug. With a variety of pack and plays out there, be sure to check your mattress size and compare it to the dimension of the sheets. If your sheets are too small, your pack and play mattress may end up bunching up like an accordion. If they are too big, they will be too loose which isn&#;t safe for your little one.

With this, be sure to pay attention to whether the sheets are designed to cover the thin, wooden pack and play support mattress (usually included with the whole pack and play and still called a mattress for some reason), or the few-inch-thick mattresses that you can buy separately for use in a pack and play.

I used a pack and play for my son for the first year of his life. One thing I found was that there weren&#;t many pack and play sheet brands with fun designs or patterns! Unfortunately, there isn&#;t as wide of a selection for pack and play sheets as there are for regular crib mattress sheets. But if you shop around, you can find some cute patterns! Or at least a color that fits your taste.

Elastic corners

Surprisingly, not all pack and play sheets have elastic at the corners (like a fitted sheet does). Although the elastic isn&#;t necessary, it does help to keep the sheet in place. Without the elastic corners, you may find yourself needing to readjust the sheet often.

Just like adult sheets, baby sheets come in a variety of thread counts and fabrics, leaving some more soft than others. We all want our little ones to be as cozy as possible!

Mattress Protection

Oh, how important this one is. Pack and play mattresses can generally be wiped clean fairly easily. However, there are certain messes where you may want an extra layer of protection. I learned this the hard way when my son had his first stomach bug. I didn&#;t have a mattress protector on his pack and play and ended up spending hours cleaning his mattress thoroughly enough!

In my opinion, Pack and Play sheets are a little more costly than they should be. Especially considering they don&#;t come in a variety of fun patterns. Generally speaking, they typically are around $8-$20 a sheet, with most being around the $$15 range. Obviously, this isn&#;t going to break your bank account, but considering you will probably need at least two sheets (to have one as a backup), if you are on a budget, this can easily become an annoying extra cost.

FAQs &#; Pack and Play Sheets

Are crib sheets and pack n play sheets the same?

Nope! It would be nice if shopping were that easy, but it’s not. Crib sheets are made to fit a standard crib mattress, which is slightly larger and much, much thicker than a pack and play mattress.

It’s not a good idea to use crib sheets on a pack and play because there will be lots and lots of extra material, which results in an unsafe sleep environment for baby.

Should I put sheets on my pack n play?

The main purpose of pack n play sheets is to make the sleeping area of your pack n play more comfortable for your baby. The included wood and minimal padding of the pack and play just won’t do it for most babies. Buying an actual pack n play mattress and soft sheets will do a lot to keep your baby comfortable as they sleep or nap.

Playard sheets also help with keeping things clean. If baby has an accident, you can (hopefully) just wash the sheet and be on your way instead of having to clean the pack and play itself, which usually isn’t machine washable.

How big is a pack n play mattress?

The standard pack n play mattress measures inches by inches. The standard seems to be 27 by 39inches, but there is no one standard size for pack and plays or playards. The vast majority fall into that size category. Most pack and play mattresses are about 3 inches deep as well.

Compare that to the 28 by 52 by 6  inches for a standard crib mattress, and the 24 by 38 by 3 inches of a mini crib mattress, and you can see why you would want a pack and play specific mattress!

What is the best material for pack and play sheets?

There are so many pack and play sheets out there in a variety of materials. While some people like a microfiber or polyester sheet because it’s easy to clean and stain-resistant, I’d go for a cotton jersey playard sheet every time. It’s thin, breathable, and soft. You can use it any time of year and it’s always machine washable.

Organic cotton wins bonus points for being free from pesticides and other chemicals that can still be present in the final sheet.

How To Make a Pack ‘N Play More Comfortable #MomHacks

DIY Fitted Sheet for Pack &#;n Play

Whatever you call it (porta crib, playpen, playard, pack n play, portable baby jail) and however you use it (travel crib, baby containment unit, toy storage), you know it gets dirty.  I notice, especially when traveling, that the fabric doesn&#;t seem that comfy for baby either.  When Scarlet was just 12 weeks old we took her cross-country to visit family and she slept in an old travel crib dug up from someone&#;s garage.  The only thing we had to cover the dirty bottom of it was a big fluffy blanket that didn&#;t seem safe for such a young one, so of course I didn&#;t sleep the whole week worrying she was going to suffocate.  Never again!  Sheets for these aren&#;t readily available, so I thought I&#;d show you how to make a play yard sheet.  I think it&#;s super simple, let me know if you give it a try.

DIY Pack &#;N Play Sheet Tutorial

This sheet fits my Combi Jazz Play Yard &#;mattress&#; which is pretty standard and measures 36&#; X &#; (they&#;re all around 30&#;x40&#;), but the sheet is forgiving so if yours is within the general ballpark this sheet should work fine.

1.  Wash, dry and cut your fabric. Add 7 inches to the length and to the width of your mattress, so i cut a piece of fabric 43&#; X &#;.  And a piece of 3/4&#; elastic 60&#; long.

2.  Fold it in half lengthwise and then widthwise so it looks like this:

On the outside corner, the one with no folds, cut a &#; square through all the layers.

Your item now looks like this:

3.  Line up the cut edges at one corner and sew them together with right sides facing:

Repeat on all four corners.

4.  Along the bottom of your sheet, fold the fabric 1/4&#; to the inside and iron, then 1&#; and iron, and pin in place.

Starting next to a corner, sew all the way around with a straight stitch, leaving a hole and backstitching and the beginning and end.

5.  Thread your piece of 3/4&#; elastic through the hole and all the way around. It helps to pin one side of it to an ironing board or some other surface and to use a safety pin to feed it through:

Pull it out and sew both sides together with a stretch stitch or a zig zag stitch.

Close the hole by sewing across the opening with a straight stitch.

You&#;re done!
It looks like this from the bottom:

And like this from the top:

Place your homemade playpen sheet on the mattress.  Yay!
