What do the Lights on the Light Ring Mean?

Your robot may use a Light Ring – in combination with sounds and app notifications – to communicate its status.

Light Ring locations:

Light Ring Colors

In general, these robots will use a series of colors to indicate their current status.

  • White - I'm awake and everything is normal.
  • Blue - I'm doing something special.
  • Red - There's a problem.


If the Light Ring is red, you can always press CLEAN, tap the robot’s bumper to hear what’s wrong. Errors are also shown in the iRobot HOME App on Wi-Fi enabled models.

Note: If you want to turn off the Light Ring pattern, you can do so by pressing the Clean button for two seconds.

For users who have enabled the Beta option in the iRobot® HOME App, and have a Roomba® i7, Roomba® s9, or Braava jet® m6 robot, there will be a new hibernating pattern on the light ring, which will appear when their robot is on a dock and fully charged. Once the robot is fully charged, the light ring will shine solid white for 10 seconds. At this point, the LED at the right bottom of the light ring will fade in and out for seven (7) seconds, before the lights go out for seconds. Finally, the LED at the left bottom of the light ring will fade in and out for seven (7) seconds, before the lights turn off for another seconds. 

A new charging pattern may appear on your i3, i1, i7, s9, or m6 device. 

This pattern will show as a spinning arc on your device, and its color and the placement of the light on the arc will indicate the battery's charge. 

You will have the option to disable this pattern. All you must do is press the CLEAN button for two (2) seconds, and it will be disabled until the robot is started.

I must say this is a common issue with the Roomba , and the common reasons could be because of:

  • Debris on the Roomba sensors underneath the unit

In case your Roomba is out of the warranty period, you are recommended to give it a temporary fix to verify the issue first and then quickly purchase a new docking station for the replacement.

Why is there a flashing red light while Roomba is charging?

There are two different flashing red lights. iRobot calls this ‘pulsing amber.’ A slower pulse means the battery is low and charging. This isn’t anything to worry about. Just let the robot charge for a period of time. It will get back to cleaning your floors before too long.

The second flashing red light is a faster blinking. This means the Roomba vacuum has gone into a hour refresh charge. This is true for , , , , and series robots. The hour refresh charge is a normal part of the vacuum’s maintenance and isn’t something to be very concerned about. 

When the battery has been cycled a number of times, the robot automatically begins this refresh cycle. Leave it overnight and it will be sucking up dirt again the next day.

Can I charge my Roomba without a dock?

Yes, most Roomba models can be plugged directly into the charger. This is a good way to test the dock. If the Roomba won’t charge on the dock but does charge directly, then there could be a problem with the dock.

Using your Roomba without a dock can make it less effective, though. It may not do scheduled cleanings properly. It may also get lost in the house and not find its way back to the charging point.

Generally, you’ll know the Roomba is charging if the flashing light is amber (orange). If the light is Red, there’s a problem with the battery. If it’s a solid green light, your Roomba is fully charged.

There are instances where a White light could indicate the Roomba is charging. Keep reading to find out the details for each Roomba model and how to tell if the Roomba is charging.

Roombas take on average about hours to fully charge from an empty battery. This means that every time your Roomba does a cleaning job, it’s best to recharge again immediately. Otherwise, you’re waiting around for it to recharge and constantly asking yourself, “Is my Roomba charging?”

Thankfully the Home Base that comes with your Roomba allows it to automatically find its way back to it and dock to recharge when it senses that the battery is running down.

But as we’ve sometimes seen, even if the Roomba is at the Home Base, it’s sometimes won’t dock or won’t charge or just won’t hold the charge. So when the Roomba is near the docking station, how do you know whether or not the Roomba is charging?

Plug Charger Directly Into The Roomba

The easiest way to tell if a Roomba is charging is when it’s plugged straight into the charger plug to the wall socket. The charger will have a solid green power light on to indicate that power is flowing through the plug and going into the Roomba’s battery to recharge it. But for homes that use a Roomba and a Home Base together, this is a different story altogether.

When first docked into the Clean Base charging station, the Roomba’s power indicator light will turn on for a couple of seconds before eventually turning off – this is due to an energy-saving function in the Roomba’s CPU when it senses that the battery is charging.

This is similar to the Roomba i3+, i6+, i8+, and s9+ models.

Overview of Flashing Lights and Colors

There are a number of colored lights that the Roomba uses to tell you certain things. Here is a list of the more common ones that occur in a Roomba robot vacuum and what they mean for the user.

  • Green power indicator – means that the Roomba’s battery is fully charged and is ready to use
  • Flashing amber or white power indicator – means that the Roomba battery is still charging and is not full yet
  • Red power indicator light – means that the Roomba battery is drained and needs to be charged
  • Quick pulsing amber light – means that the Roomba battery is in refresh charging mode and should be left for at least 16 hours for it to complete the refresh charging cycle
  • If your Roomba light is flashing red while charging – that means it’s a battery problem and needs to be addressed immediately.

More often than not, the flashing red light will result in needing to replace the battery. You can purchase third-party batteries that are usually cheaper and have more capacity than iRobot batteries. But I usually still get the manufacturer certified ones.

How to Tell if Your Roomba is Charging (By Model)

Different Roomba models have different ways of indicating that they are in recharge mode.

The Roomba series will show a flashing green light for a few seconds.

If there’s a red light on the LCD display on the top of the unit, there’s a charging error. To fix this, try using a dry cloth and wipe down the electronic contacts on both the Roomba and the Home Base until there are no traces of dust or debris.

Try docking it manually again and unless your battery has an internal issue, it should charge properly now. There’ll be the flashing green light for a few seconds, then all lights on the unit will turn off to save energy.

Roomba E5 ()

When your Roomba E5 is charging properly when docked into the Home Base dock, the unit will flash green for about 4 seconds and then turn off to save energy.

The Roomba series has a power indicator light on the top and it will also indicate that it’s charging with a flashing green light for a couple of seconds. Then it’ll start its full charge and save energy, turning off all the lights on the unit

If the battery is completely drained on your Roomba series before you charge it in the Home Base, the battery indicator (shaped like a battery) on the LCD display on the top of the Roomba will slowly flash red. It will continue flashing red until it’s fully recharged when it turns green.

When it is charging, the ring light around the CLEAN button will pulse White to signal that it’s charging. After a few seconds, the lights will turn off as the Roomba goes into deep charging mode to save energy.

One exception with the Roomba i3, i3+, and i4 models. These will still pulse a white light while charging, but when the battery power is still low, the pulsing light will be red.

When the Roomba i series models are fully charged, the ring light will be a solid white.

Roomba s9 and s9+

If the right light around the CLEAN button is pulsing on the Roomba s9, that means it’s charging. It’ll stop flashing after 60 seconds to save energy, while the Roomba continues charging for the next hours.

There is a particular error message that your Roomba will show to indicate a battery problem. If the battery in your Roomba is causing issues with the operation, the LCD display will show an error message saying Roomba Charging Error 5.

This means you would need to have the battery looked at, or replace it. You can find replacements on Amazon for any model of Roomba you have but it’s advisable to use certified manufacturer batteries as they’re more trusted products.
