Why is my TV displaying a black box (with or without text)? This is caused by the Closed Captioning (CC) system being activated either through your TV or the set-top box. To disable this feature, please review the following steps:
- On your TV, turn off CC
- Note: you may need to use the remote or refer to the manual that came with your TV
- On your set-top box, check to make sure that the CC is OFF by accessing the set-top box's User Settings Menu
- Press CABLE then POWER on your remote to turn the set-top box OFF
- Press the MENU or SETTINGS button on your remote to access the User Settings Menu
- Make sure CLOSED CAPTION is set to DISABLED
- Press CABLE then POWER on your remote to turn the set-top box ON

- Press the Menu button on your remote
- Check for a row of buttons with the letters A, B, C, and D on the remote and press the letter A
- Scroll to the Language section by using the arrow buttons

How to Turn Closed Captions on for Satellite TV
For satellite TV clients, whether you’re with DIRECTV or Dish, turning closed captioning involves just a few steps.
Turning on closed captions for DIRECTV is a fast and straightforward three-step process:
- On your remote control press the INFO button
