Sometimes it's impossible not to find your head in the clouds—hey, inspiration strikes!—but if it happens to you frequently, you probably won't want any extra distractions. A Floating LED Cloud Lamp, for example, likely wouldn't be the best bet for your productivity.

Though it may not be your go-to office lamp, it is the sort of zen investment piece that can be an absolute showstopper in your home. Richard Clarkson Studio—known for their incredible cloud lighting—collaborated with Crealev to use their levitation technology to bring a floating cloud lamp to life.

This content is imported from Vimeo. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

As you can imagine, something this unique will cost you—$4,, to be exact. For that four-figure sum, you'll get your own personal rechargeable cloud, which floats approximately inches off of its base, held there by rare earth magnets, electromagnets, and a location sensor.

Wait, it gets even cooler, though: When it's on, the cloud actually bobs and rotates in order to give you "a more realistic atmospheric experience," the site says. Since the LEDs can also be controlled by a remote and range from white to colored lights, the Floating Cloud will—hold the phone—react to the sounds in the room by picking up voices and music via an embedded microphone. In other words, it'll dance to the beat.

As much as you may want one of these now, dropping $K on a new lamp isn't exactly the most casual transaction. If it's out of the realm of possibility for you right now, check out these more affordable options. While they don't float, they'll give your room a similarly laid-back vibe.

Project Study: The Floating Cloud

In December a small company from Eindhoven called Crealev reached out to us asking if we were open to a collaboration. They explained they had developed a magnetic levitation technology and were looking to create a range of showcase products to really show some of the possibilities of the technology. They had seen our Cloud products and thought that it would be a match made in heaven to combine them. We very much thought so too!

Sketches

Early in we began working together with Crealev on some initial concepts and exploring how to best solve for our two main challenges. Challenge number 1 was how to hide / disguise the magnetic platform which houses Crealev’s technology. Challenge number 2 was how to power the cloud so that it would be cordless.

How it works

One idea for the magnetic platform was to give it a more natural form as if the Cloud were levitating over a pond or lake. The team at Crealev came up with a clear way to achieve this using a piece of mirrored glass and a wooden frame shaped into an organic blob shape. The effect of this was stunning and the mirrored glass made it feel as if the Cloud was levitating twice the height.

The next challenge was powering the Cloud itself, so that it would be wireless while it floated. A key point of what-ever we put into the Cloud was that it had to be as lightweight as possible in order not to reduce the levitation height. We settled on a LiPo battery that had a decent storage capacity without being too heavy. We used a much smaller speaker than what is inside our Speaker Cloud product.

Together with Crealev we shot a promotional video of the prototype to celebrate the collaboration and share with the world. We named the collaboration Making Weather suggesting that it is a work in progress, but also nods to people's ability to set the mood (atmosphere) in their own spaces. It wasn’t long before design blogs and international media picked up the piece and inquiries about a commercial version flooded in.

We set to work to improve on the design of the prototype to make it more commercially viable as a product. Some of the decisions were difficult to make - we decided to remove the reflective glass on the base as we found that it interfered with the effectiveness of the levitation technology, we also made the decision to have the platform be as small and minimal as possible to keep production costs within acceptable range. We reduced the size of the Cloud and removed the speaker so that it would float noticeably higher - increased to inches (70mm)! We found a specialised USB cord with a magnetic connector so that it would be possible to charge the Cloud without having to take it off the levitation platform. As with any product development we balanced the three key elements: aesthetics, functionality, and production cost to find a version that would optimise all three as much as possible.

Because of the sculptural nature of the collaboration as well as the final design itself we decided to produce a limited run of units, each to be signed and serialised for authenticity. At launch we had pre sold 50% of the available units and took less than 12 months to sell out of the remaining units.

We were lucky enough to attract the attention of R&B artist Drake who purchased several units and liked the product so much that he tagged us in a video of the Cloud floating in his home in Toronto.

The entire journey of the Floating Cloud from design process through to production & distribution has been an absolute joy. We particularly love designs that bring about a sense of wonder and magic and this was definitely one of them. Also a huge thanks to the team at Crealev for being so great to work with!

While we continue to get inquiries and requests from customers to do another production run so we continue to explore options for where the Floating Cloud might go in the future. For now we are focusing on continuing our inhouse furniture and lighting design as well as expanding our design consulting services. If you have any questions about this product or about our design process please feel free to contact us, we would love to work with you to develop your idea and bring it to life.

I would not buy again and will file a BBB Complaint for false and misleading advertising and product description. I bought a pair of shoes, they said It was leather. I have plastic shoes in a box that look like they were manufactured uncontrolled, non QA and QC environment. Do not buy anything from this vendor.

Touch of Modern has terrible customer service and sells inferior products. I purchased a convertible beanbag chair. It is supposed to be stuffed with a queen sized beanbag mattress. The mattress that I received is stuffed with shredded foam (old and hard). When I contacted Touch of Modern about a return I received an email saying that the product was a final sale and can't be returned. The only place that I could find that information was on the invoice after I placed the order. Save yourself some grief and hours of aggregation, don't purchase anything from Touch of Modern!

Thank you, you have successfully subscribed to our newsletter! Enjoy reading our tips and recommendations.

Purchased an item believing it was a metal version of a sling-shot that I had purchased on Amazon in heavy plastic. The item was listed as "aluminum alloy" and priced at $ The one I purchased on Amazon was exactly like it for $ under a different brand name. When I received the item it was exactly like the one that I had purchased for $! It's exactly the same except I received more extra items (ammo balls, ammo bag, flashlight batteries) with the $26 version. I contacted T.O.M. the very same day I received it and asked for an RA to return the item. I was told the item was "not returnable"!

Since when is an unused item unreturnable the same day received? Who's customer service is that bad? Touch of Modern, that's who. I had purchased 3 items myself in the past year, 2 on my daughter's account and 3 on my sons. Not a one-time unappreciative customer, but a loyal customer by definition. Had no influence on their return decision whatsoever and the listing did not include a "sales final" warning.

I placed my order and received it in a timely manner. It’s when I, excitedly, opened my package, I noticed, immediately, that something was wrong. I’ve purchased from Tiffany’s many times and quickly realized the packaging was fake. After a day, I noticed a huge crack on the heart. This feels very shady. I’ve requested a refund to my back because I do NOT want any of their products. Let’s see how this plays out…

Touch of Modern erased my order, I printed it at the time of order. They sent 2 Bask No. 9 Masterpiece of Seduction and none of the Tangerine Dream Cologne (more expensive!). So the company ripped me off. Nothing like being shorted. Filing a FTC complaint too.

Dear madam/sir, This is the first time I ordered multiple watches in your website and it did not received yet. I followed up on after the mentioned time frame only it's been more than 55 days since my order and when I spoke with the customer support completely their answer is different. They said 3 different dates saying my watches are getting arrived and they skipped all the mentioned dates and said another different date. Even I waited for that day too. They missed that day too and when I again sent email they said that watch has arrived and inspection is going on with logistics team.

I waited for 5 days and again asked what is the update now? They are saying that the watches are not received yet so I am really lost hope in the words of customer support. I am really depressed and asked to cancel my orders and will go to another website for buying now. They are saying that it's a huge amount and it needs to get approval. Do you think is that necessary for me? I want to beat myself with my shoe. Done a big mistake in shopping TOMO. I clearly mentioned it's a gift I need to present but you guys are not there on your words in sorting out this and fix my problem.

Erin in customer service did get back to me and issued a credit for the pants they sent in the incorrect size. She told me to keep the pants they sent in error. I thus feel satisfied with the response from Touch of Modern.

Original review: July 29,

I ordered a pair of pants 36W by 34L. They sent 36W by 32L. I contacted them to return for a new pair. Erin in customer service told me they don’t have another pair to mail out. I told them I want a credit and asked what to do with the pants that are the incorrect size. Erin responded she can issue a credit to my Touch of Modern account. She never answered what I am supposed to do with the pants. I responded, "I want a credit to my credit card or PayPal account not Touch of Modern." Have not heard anything else so will dispute the charge!

Update: A representative has reached out to me and was able to cancel my order! I am truly shocked and also very grateful that there was a follow up with a resolution.

Original review: May 3,

I placed an order for the wrong item (specific color) and attempted to cancel (then re-order) within 46 minutes but they refused and said that due to their policy then cannot do it. Supposedly the orders are IMMEDIATELY forwarded to the vendors and processed right away But the shipping is 2 weeks unlike other websites that can ship in 2 days I am so disappointing as a order a specific product for a gift and picked the wrong color and CANNOT return this $ product. My bad I guess

Be very wary of any item you purchase online with them, first of all the bulk order for savings is a crock since I will have waited almost 2 weeks for sunglasses I purchased from them for $ which I found on eBay exact same pair brand new with 4 day free shipping for $ Be very very careful when purchasing anything from them and make sure to research these amazing deals online first as I am % sure you will find the exact same item for less.
