Please request an application by sending an email to [email protected] We will discuss available dogs AFTER we receive a completed application returned by email. It typically TAKES 4-8 weeks to process an application, schedule and complete a home visit, verify references and place a dog. We receive an average of 61 completed applications for each rescue dog listed on petfinder. Fox Terrier Rescue Information: Fox Terriers have been around for centuries and have been bred to produce a number of different types of dogs. Today, Fox Terrier generally refers to either a Smooth or Wire-haired variety, which are virtually identical with the exception of their coats. Fox Terriers are playful, affectionate, scrappy little dogs. Fox Terriers get along well with children and can typically be socialized to interact well with other dogs, although they have been known to pick fights with much larger canines. Fox Terriers may hunt non-canine pets, especially birds. This breed needs plenty of exercise and should be kept on a leash or in a fenced yard because of its tendency to chase and explore. Fox Terriers can live in an apartment if they get enough exercise.

Fox Terrier Trivia: The Fox Terrier is nicknamed the Foxy. Fox Terriers have been used in hunts for centuries. Fox Terriers are excellent ratters. Fox Terriers harass foxes that have gone into their holes until they come out. Fox Terriers are good at performing tricks.

Wire Fox Terriers

Known for living in the moment, these dogs are always up for an adventure. If you’re looking for an energetic and whip-smart companion, a Foxy might be a perfect match for you!

Fox Terriers come in two coat types, wire and smooth, but the Wire Fox Terrier breed is the more popular of the two. Handsome and happy, these classic pups (also called “Foxys”) are known for their outgoing and active natures. Always up for anything, these bold dogs love to rise to a challenge.

Foxys are the perfect size — small enough to easily take anywhere, but big enough to handle some roughhousing — and have a longer lifespan, making them a perfect family pet. They get along great with older children, and will joyfully spend hours playing in the backyard. If you’re looking for an adventurous pup to join your pack, the Wire Fox Terrier breed may be your prefect match!

If you’re hoping to bring one of these loving terriers into your home, consider picking one up at a local shelter or rescue group, rather than supporting breeders and puppy mills.

Why We Love the Wire Fox Terrier Breed

  • These dogs are the perfect match for active owners. Like all terriers, they have plenty of energy, and will love joining you on your daily runs or for playtime in the yard!

  • The Wire Fox Terrier breed is known for its charming personality. They’re outgoing and inquisitive, while also being loyal and intelligent.

  • Speaking of intelligence, these pups are naturals when it comes to agility and obedience training. Many Wire Fox Terrier owners enjoy teaching their pups an abundance of tricks!

Things to Consider

  • Foxys are a vocal bunch — not all dog owners love their high-pitched barks.

  • These guys were bred as hunters, and that instinct remains strong with the breed today. The Wire Fox Terrier breed does best in a home where dogs are the only pets.

  • Wire Fox Terrier puppies can be tough to housetrain due to their willful nature, so crate training is recommended.

Why Rescue?

In general, Foxys are a healthy breed with no major health concerns. However, the Wire Fox Terrier is a rare breed, so these dogs are prime targets for overbreeding and irresponsible practices. It can be hard to find a good breeder with a healthy litter. Irresponsible breeding practices can lead to an increase in health issues the breed suffers from, including deafness, cataracts and hip dysplasia.

Dedicated to finding the perfect home for every adoptable homeless Fox Terrier

We are a group of unpaid volunteers that foster Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers and are devoted to finding them forever homes. We
work together in a network (American Fox Terrier Rescue, Inc.) of caring people throughout the U.S.and Canada who love Fox
Terriers. As members of American Fox Terrier Rescue, Inc.(a 501c-3 non-profit organization) we cover: NJ, PA, MA, NY State, CT, RI,
NH, VT, & ME.  When needed, we also help the volunteers and Foxies in all the other states. Please remember we are all volunteers
with jobs, families, and personal commitments. We ask that you be patient. We will answer e-mails and phone calls as quickly as
possible. We know how anxious you are to adopt a new friend, but please be considerate when waiting to hear from us.

Fox Terrier Rescue takes in Smooths and Wires from shelters, puppy mills, strays, and owner relinquishes. We help dogs who have
lost their homes through divorce or death of their owners, owner relocation, birth of a baby, not getting along with housemates,
retirement, job changes, medical or behavior issues......the reasons are numerous. And, most of the time it is due to no fault of the
dog. Many come from wonderful homes, but through life changes, the Foxie is in need of a new home.

First, don't wait until the problem escalates into something serious. If you have purchased a puppy/dog from a reputable breeder, call
them and ask for suggestions and help.  A reliable breeder, will be able to work with you and your dog to eliminate the problems or will
take their dog back if needed.

If you did not get your Fox Terrier from a responsible breeder, then you have a bigger challenge. Commercial and "backyard" breeders
are primarily interested in making money. There is little knowledge of the breed or of the dog's needs. In many cases, the family finds
out too late that this cute little "fuzz ball" is not a lap dog. But instead, they have a ball of energy who needs lots of attention and
exercise. Most Fox Terriers remain active throughout their entire life and require time for exercise. If this is not possible in your
schedule, then both you and the dog might be happier if she is in another home.

Education is the key. Knowing the Fox Terrier temperament and needs can make a big difference. With help, many problems can be
eliminated. Sometimes if the problems are serious, a professional trainer or behaviorist should be contacted. Like raising a child,
having a Fox Terrier in your life takes time, patience, and commitment.

If you are having problems with your Fox Terrier, please contact us right away. We are always willing to help in any way we can. Our
first choice is to keep the dog with his family. If that is not possible, we will then work together to find a new home for your dog.

Wire Fox Terrier Puppies Roughhousing - 9 weeks old

Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest is an independent Rescue comprised entirely of volunteers who sacrifice a tremendous amount of time, trouble and tears for Rescue and receive no monetary compensation whatsoever. We share a compassion and love for the breed and in helping all those in need.

Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest does not occupy a facility and each rescued Terrier is cared for in a foster home. They are loved, pampered and treated as a member of the family. Living with them allows us to evaluate for personality, any specific needs and behavioral traits. We inform the prospective applicant as much as possible about each Wire Fox Terrier prior to placement in order to find that perfect home for each dog and applicant. WFTRM fully vets each dog prior to placement and gives them the highest degree of medical attention, procedures and treatments. Each Wire Fox Terrier receives the best possible care during their stay in Rescue.

Wire Fox Terriers arrive at Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest for a variety of reasons - owner death, divorce, moving, life changes, not getting along with another canine, feline or human member or simply not researching the breed before acquiring. Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest rescues those who have been abandoned, found themselves in Animal Control or a Shelter or being released from breeders or puppy mills. We are committed to finding a permanent, loving home for every rescue.
