So far I have:
removed the drive shaft at the rear U-joint
removed the existing worn center bearing
slid the entire drive shaft out of the transmission housing
taken the two driveshafts apart
removed MOST of the existing worn center bearing
Here is my problem:
The existing, worn center bearing (that I'm still not 100% sure had to be replaced, I'm doing this on the advice of another mechanic. But that's another story) did not want to come off the driveshaft. So I had to remove it with a pry bar and a small sledge hammer. As you can imagine, the old one pretty much fell apart, but left the interior collar of the whole assembly still on the driveshaft. This is the inner race where the ball bearings of the center bearing sit and rotate around the shaft. I've used a small torch to heat it, a pry bar and I still can't get that inner collar off.
Obviously I cannot install the new one and get this truck back on the road until this is replaced and the driveshaft reinstalled.
PLEASE HELP. Sigh.
Do youhave the same problem?

What is the Center Support Bearing all about?
While many of the cars on the road today use a front-wheel drive format, there are plenty of rear-wheel drive vehicles out there. These range from trucks to SUVs to passenger cars, and they all use drive shafts that connect the transmission to the rear differential in order to turn the rear wheels.
However, in very long drive shafts made with two sections, strains are problematic. A center support bearing is used to provide support for the shaft, reduce strain on drivetrain components, and allow the shaft to turn freely. It is a universal joint that allows free motion even if the shaft isn’t fully straight. If the center support bearing is worn, seized, or damaged, you will hear excessive squeaking noises or experience a “binding” feeling when driving.
Keep in mind:
- Replacing the center support bearing will require removing at least part of the drive shaft.
- Driving with a failed or failing center support bearing can cause serious damage to the transmission, the differential, or the drive shaft.
How it's done:
- The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands
- The transmission drive shaft with the center support bearing is removed from vehicle
- The defective center support bearing is removed from the driveshaft
- The new center support bearing is installed to the driveshaft and driveshaft is re-installed
- The vehicle is removed from jack stands and road tested for proper operation
Your center support bearing should be inspected on a regular basis (during normal maintenance, such as an oil change) for signs of wear and tear. It should be replaced by one of our expert mechanics immediately if they notice any damage.
What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Center Support Bearing?
- Grinding/squealing noise when the vehicle is moving
- A feeling of resistance/lack of performance
How important is this service?
Because the center support bearing upholds the drive shaft and ensures that it can spin freely, part failure is a serious concern. If the bearing freezes, you can easily damage transmission components, differential components, or even the drive shaft itself. We recommend immediate replacement.

How to Remove a Silverado Carrier Bearing
The carrier bearing on a Chevrolet Silverado is used on extended cab and crew-cab models to support the two-piece driveline that connects the transmission to the rear axle. This bearing can wear down over time, causing an imbalance in the driveline that could eventually cause the driveline to fail completely. To fix the problem, you first have to remove the carrier bearing from the vehicle to replace it. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, but the process is similar for other years of Silverados.
Park the Silverado on a level surface. Place wheel chocks around the front wheels. Lift the rear of the truck with the jack and put jack stands beneath the frame and axle to support the weight of the truck. Lower the jack so the truck is on the stands completely. Put the drain pan beneath the transmission.
Unbolt the straps holding the driveline to the rear axle. Use the pry bar to take the driveline out of the rear axle.
Unbolt the carrier bearing from the driveline using an open-end wrench. The carrier is located in the middle of the frame and goes around the driveline.
Carefully lower the driveline and carrier bearing away from the frame, then pull the driveline out of the transmission.
