Walmart has been America’s biggest retailer since the s, its focus on low costs and ultra-efficient logistics helping it edge out competitors and keep customers coming back. But Amazon has been gaining on Walmart, and the pandemic gave the online retail giant a huge boost.
Both companies are continuously searching for ways to cut costs while meeting consumer needs. It seems one of the needs that’s steadily increasing is delivery. Whether due to busy schedules, health or safety concerns, or simply avoiding the stress of steering a loaded shopping cart up and down countless aisles, more people are trading in-store shopping for online shopping. Amazon clearly has a leg up over Walmart in that arena, but the brick-and-mortar retail king isn’t about to hand over its crown without a fight.
Yesterday Walmart announced it’s adding a new delivery service for goods purchased online—and not just any delivery service, but one powered by driverless cars. The company has partnered with automaker Ford and autonomous car startup Argo AI, and plans to use Ford Escape hybrid cars outfitted with Argo’s self-driving software to make deliveries.
The service will initially be available to customers in Austin, Miami, and the Washington DC area.
Although headlines about the announcement are emphasizing the driverless aspect of the delivery vehicles, they will in fact still have human safety drivers for the time being. And it’s unclear whether customers will retrieve their orders from the cars—that would make the most sense if the ultimate goal is to eliminate the safety drivers—or if drivers will get orders from the cars to customers’ doorsteps.
Consumer expectations around fast, seamless delivery are going up, probably thanks in large part to Amazon’s ability to meet those expectations (Prime customers have had the option of free same-day delivery since ).
But same-day delivery has some serious side effects to consider, including outsize stress on workers and a negative environmental impact. As Patrick Browne, director of global sustainability at UPS, put it, “The time in transit has a direct relationship to the environmental impact. I dont think the average consumer understands the environmental impact of having something tomorrow vs. two days from now.”
Walmart and Amazon (and their smaller competitors) will continue to roll out services like autonomous delivery as long as consumers demand them (and are willing to pay for them). And as the big players in retail work to outdo each other and their technology improves, these services will likely drop in cost.
As consumers, we’ll take any innovation that makes our lives easier or saves us time. But once in a while, it’s probably worth asking: how badly do we actually need paper towels or dental floss or whatever’s in our virtual shopping carts dropped at our doorsteps within hours? Sure, shopping can be a pain, and some orders are truly urgent. But as our expectations around effortless, fast gratification rise—and the market accordingly shapes itself to meet those expectations—we should be conscious of the associated non-monetary costs.
A year ago Walmart launched its membership program, Walmart+, which includes benefits like prescription and fuel discounts and free grocery deliveries. Deutsche Bank estimates Walmart+ has about 32 million subscribers—and 86 percent of them also have Amazon Prime. To stay competitive and expand its membership program, Walmart is converting many of its stores into mini-warehouses with high-tech, automated systems.
Amazon, for its part, recently patented a delivery system that involves several small secondary vehicles dispersing from a truck to leave packages on customers doorsteps.
It appears the future of retail will involve a lot more technology and a lot less in-store shopping, whether you’re buying from Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, or any number of other stores.

Walmart is killing off its most popular app as online shopping reaches record highs — and it's a brilliant strategy

Walmart is shutting down its online grocery app, and will now allow shoppers to order groceries and general merchandise in one place: the Walmart app.
Previously, shoppers had to visit two different apps to access everything Walmart offers.
The grocery app enabled shoppers to order food and other goods for pickup and delivery. The Walmart app allowed shoppers to order all other products, such as items available only online, as well as access store maps and Walmart's payment system, Walmart Pay.
The company announced plans to merge the two apps in March, and said Wednesday that process was complete.
Existing grocery app customers will now be directed to download the Walmart app, and their information and carts will be transferred to the newly refreshed app.
Walmart is merging the apps just as online grocery demand surges.
Walmart's pickup and delivery sales grew as much as % during peak in the first quarter of the year, executives said Tuesday. The company's grocery app won the No. 1 spot in shopping apps in April, according to the analytics firm App Annie.
The "online grocery app was No. 1 in the App Store as customers turned at an unprecedented pace to pickup and delivery services — which is why we think there is no better time than now to integrate our two apps and bring them an even better, more comprehensive experience," said Walmart chief customer officer Janey Whiteside. "We don't ask customers to make two trips to the store, one for groceries and one for all the other things they need, so we shouldn't ask them to visit two apps."
Walmart has been gradually migrating customers to the refreshed Walmart app, and said 50% of online grocery orders are now placed through the platform.
In an interview with Business Insider, Whiteside said Walmart is seeing more diverse baskets and higher tickets from customers using the new app. This may be due to the fact that customers have access to a wider selection of items.
"We've seen an uptick in the amount of general merchandise they're buying alongside their groceries, like toys and gardening tools as they shop for bananas and apples and cereal," she said.
In addition to merging the apps, Walmart has also added "hundreds of thousands" of new slots for online grocery pickup and added new capabilities allowing customers to reserve a no-contact pickup or delivery or order Express Delivery to have items delivered to their doors in less then two hours.
Customers can also use the app to refill prescriptions and select "curbside pickup" or delivery for those prescriptions. Contactless Walmart Pay is also available through the Walmart App.
Jury Awards $ Million After Walmart Fires Woman With Down Syndrome

Marlo Spaeth started working as a sales associate at a Walmart in Manitowoc, Wis., in , folding towels, cleaning aisles, processing returns and greeting customers, her lawyers said. Over the next 15 years, she received several pay raises and positive performance reviews.
One manager wrote that she was “great with customers” and a “very hard worker.” Another manager wrote, “Marlo is a very friendly person and is a delight to have working here.”
But Ms. Spaeth’s hours suddenly shifted in November , when Walmart instituted a computerized scheduling system, which the company said was based on customer traffic and was designed to ensure that enough people were working when the store was busiest.
Ms. Spaeth was expected to work from 1 p.m. to p.m., rather than her previous schedule of noon to 4 p.m., her lawyers said.
The abrupt change represented a significant hardship for Ms. Spaeth, who has Down syndrome and thrives on routine, her lawyers said. Ms. Spaeth repeatedly told a manager that she wanted her old schedule back, her lawyers said.
“She’s afraid she’s going to miss the bus,” her sister and guardian, Amy Jo Stevenson, said she had told a Walmart manager, according to court records. “She’s afraid she’s going to miss dinner. It’s upsetting to her. She gets too hot. She says she feels sick, and she can’t accommodate it, so we need it switched back for her.”
But the company refused to switch Ms. Spaeth back to her old schedule at the store, which was open 24 hours a day and had more than employees, her lawyers said. Walmart then took disciplinary action against Ms. Spaeth twice for absenteeism and tardiness, her lawyers said.
On July 10, , Walmart fired Ms. Spaeth for excessive absenteeism.
A Walmart training coordinator took Ms. Spaeth’s vest and walked her out of the store where she had worked for about 16 years. The training coordinator later testified that both she and Ms. Spaeth had been crying and that Ms. Spaeth had not understood what was happening, court records show.
Ms. Spaeth and her mother and sister met with Walmart managers and asked that she be rehired and allowed to return to her old schedule, her lawyers said. But Walmart refused to rehire her, even though her termination letter said she could be hired again, her lawyers said.
On Thursday, a jury in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, in Green Bay, found that Walmart had violated the Americans With Disabilities Act, which bans discrimination based on an employee’s disability, and awarded Ms. Spaeth $ million in punitive damages and $, in compensatory damages.
The jury, which deliberated for three hours after a four-day trial, found that Walmart had failed to provide Ms. Spaeth with a reasonable accommodation, even though she needed one because she has Down syndrome and it would not have posed a hardship to the company.
The jury also found that Walmart had fired Ms. Spaeth and then failed to rehire her because she has a disability.
“The jury here recognized, and apparently was quite offended, that Ms. Spaeth lost her job because of needless — and unlawful — inflexibility on the part of Walmart,” said Gregory Gochanour, a lawyer with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which had sued Walmart on behalf of Ms. Spaeth.
Walmart said in a statement that the verdict would be reduced to $,, which is the maximum amount allowed under federal law for compensatory and punitive damages.
“We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind, and we routinely accommodate thousands of associates every year,” Walmart said. “We often adjust associate schedules to meet our customers’ expectations and while Ms. Spaeth’s schedule was adjusted, it remained within the times she indicated she was available.”
The company said that it was “sensitive to this situation and believe we could have resolved this issue with Ms. Spaeth.” It added, “However, the E.E.O.C.’s demands were unreasonable.”
An E.E.O.C. lawyer declined to comment, but the agency’s website notes that compensatory and punitive damages are capped at $, for employers with more than workers.
Walmart, which employs more than million people around the world, is the nation’s largest private employer, with more than million employees in the United States, according to its website.
Julianne Bowman, the Chicago district director at the E.E.O.C., said employers, no matter how large, had an obligation under the law to evaluate the individual circumstances of employees with disabilities when considering requests for reasonable accommodations.
“Ms. Spaeth’s request was a simple one and denying it profoundly altered her life,” Ms. Bowman said in a statement.
Dr. David Smith, a former program director at the Down Syndrome Clinic of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, said in court papers that people with Down syndrome need routines to manage their day and may not have the cognitive ability to adjust well to changes.
When Walmart changed Ms. Spaeth’s schedule, the stress of the change and the pressure she felt to adapt to her new hours may have thrown her off, he said.
People with Down syndrome “make very good employees if they have the right job and an understanding employer,” said Dr. Smith, who was an expert witness for the E.E.O.C.
“Their job becomes a major focus of their life, and gives them a sense of self-worth,” he said. “When Ms. Spaeth’s schedule was changed, she was unable to adapt to that variation.”

The firing of Marlo Spaeth, an employee with Down syndrome who worked at Walmart for nearly 16 years, was not a one-time incident, but rather part of the retailer's pattern, a disability rights attorney said in a court filing Friday.
In the document, attorney Monica Murphy describes how she has represented six Wisconsin residents with disabilities, over the past five years, who have faced similar discrimination at Walmart. She said Walmart refused to accommodate these workers and instead took away their hours or forced them to take unpaid leave. Murphy is an attorney for Disability Rights Wisconsin, a nonprofit group with a mission of protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
Several other court filings on Friday told the stories of other Walmart employees with disabilities who were fired from their jobs. They included lawsuits filed by the workers' families and a jury verdict in another discrimination lawsuit that awarded more than $5 million in damages to a former Walmart employee. The employees lived in other states, including Maine, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
The filings are the latest development in a legal battle between Walmart and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The federal agency has taken up the case of Spaeth, who worked for more than a decade folding towels, tidying aisles and helping customers as a Walmart associate at a Wisconsin Supercenter. Attorneys for the EEOC argued that Walmart wrongfully fired Spaeth rather than making reasonable accommodations for her disability.
A jury in federal court found in July that Walmart violated federal law. Jurors ordered the company to pay more than $ million in damages — one of the highest in the federal agency's history for a single victim. The damages were reduced by the judge to $,, the maximum allowed under the law.
Walmart and the EEOC are now waiting for a judge to decide whether the nation's largest private employer will face tighter supervision or be forced to make changes to its corporate policies.
Walmart said it is reviewing Friday's filings. In a statement, the company's spokesman said Walmart's leaders and managers "take supporting all our associates seriously and for those with disabilities, we routinely accommodate thousands every year."
In a motion filed earlier this month, Walmart attorneys pushed back against the EEOC's calls for additional supervision. They argued that Walmart did not violate the Americans with Disabilities Act and that the EEOC had no evidence that the company would violate it in the future.
The ADA requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for workers and customers.
Murphy describes in her filing several other cases that closely resemble Spaeth's case. Like Spaeth, she said the employees had worked for Walmart for years. When Walmart began using a computerized scheduling system at their stores, they faced a sudden change to their work schedules and the company refused to adjust their hours.
Among them, she said she represented two employees with disabilities who worked for Walmart for 16 years. They were taken off work when they told Walmart they could not work 8-hour shifts. Murphy said they filed and settled their claims at the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division and the two employees never returned to work.
She is currently representing a Walmart employee in a pending case in Wisconsin's Equal Rights Division. The year employee was fired by Walmart, after struggling to adjust to her new schedule from the computerized system. Walmart terminated her, saying she had excessive absenteeism.

Walmart’s app lets you browse thousands of products, search for items that have recently gone on sale and even refill your prescriptions. So far my experience with this app has been the greatest. It’s so helpful, Fast, Accurate, It’s extremely orthodox easy to use, and navigate. No I’m not a paid customer. Just a satisfied customer. I Like the layout of the app. I love the scan & go setting. I adore Walmart pay for when I forget my wallet. I also love my delivery services that I pay for through my Walmart plus membership. They deliver right to my door step. I have become an avid shopper, more keen to my likes & dislikes because of this apps. If you never used to save your receipts, you should start filing them with this app, it will amaze you how much you can learn about yourself. I’ve learned how unhealthy we were eating. How much Sugar your consuming, how much alcohol we were purchasing. It teaches you how many unnecessary things you buy. Little by little you start to adjust your spending, as well as the way you view quality in products. Cheaper isnt always safest & expensive isn’t always better. We have loved this service and app since the pandemic. Our family ended up being separated by three states when the COVID seized the nation. My husband and I had “dates” on the phone ordering his groceries. We would discuss his meals for the week including his lunches for work, I’d add what he needed into the cart through the app then I would place the order for him to pick up at the Walmart around the corner from our home in Wyoming where he was at. I would always add something special and extra; his favorite dessert, a snack I thought he like for his lunch. Then after he’s pick up his order, which was always easy quick and simple at our Laramie Wy Walmart, he’d call to tell me what he got elated by the special items I’d thrown in he didn’t know about.
It was so easy I’ve done it now for my kids too for those holidays we couldn’t be together I’d buy them a meal. When they were feeling down and I thought they could use a banana split night with friends I’d order up all the makings and have them pick up their order at their local Walmart. And never ever a problem with ordering or picking up ( outside of shortages during hoarding but that wasn’t a flaw in your system just our nations mentality)
Thank you Walmart for making it easy to continue loving my family through food even when I can’t be there next to them.
