What are the drive wheels of the Toyota 4Runner?

The Toyota 4Runner is an interesting model. It is a true SUV and a lot of attention is centered around what wheels that drive this SUV forward. What are the drive wheels of the Toyota 4Runner? For the most part, it’s all four wheels, but it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Toyota 4Runner red front view on dirt trailIs the Toyota 4Runner rear-wheel drive?

The two base trim levels, the SR5 and the SR5 Premium, both get rear-wheel drive as standard equipment. Rear-wheel drive used to be the standard for SUVs, but the 4Runner is still carrying the torch by offering rear-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive.

Rear-wheel drive is actually better suited for an SUV over front-wheel drive if you intend to do a lot of towing or even taking it off-road. Anytime you try to accelerate, the weight of your vehicle shifts to the back, so having rear-wheel drive will typically provide better traction for you.

The SR5 and SR5 Premium are both available with part-time 4WD. The TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro all come with part-time 4WD as a standard feature. But what is part-time 4WD on the Toyota 4Runner?

Basically, the part-time 4WD drive system is what you are probably used to from four-wheel-drive systems. It gives you three settings with a 2-high mode that gives you rear-wheel drive with regular gearing. The 4-high mode is also available which is normal four-wheel drive. There is a third mode called 4-low which is four-wheel drive with low gearing for maximum traction and torque application.

Toyota 4Runner white side viewWhat is full-time 4WD in the Toyota 4Runner?

The Limited and the Limited Nightshade Edition don’t come with part-time 4WD. Instead, they get standard full-time 4WD. They are the only two trims that come with this feature, and we can explain how it works.

Full-time 4WD is exactly how it sounds. No matter which mode you select, power will be going to all four wheels. You have three models again with highfree, highlock, and lowlock. It’s the same scenario as with part-time 4WD with high and low, but the lock and free refers to the locking rear differential, which only comes with full-time 4WD.

  • Toyota has revealed the TRD Pro–exclusive Lunar Rock exterior color for the model year 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia TRD Pro models.

  • Expect to see the new trucks at dealers by the end of the year.

UPDATE 8/20/This article has been updated with pricing for the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

UPDATE 7/30/ This article has been updated with pricing for the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and Tundra TRD Pro.

Each year, Toyota introduces a hot new color for the off-road-ready 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia TRD Pro models. We've seen some great attention-grabbing colors such as Army Green, Quicksand, and Voodoo Blue, and for the model year, the TRD Pro trucks get a subtle new Lunar Rock exterior color. As with the rest of the TRD Pro–specific exterior colors, we can't stop daydreaming about getting them dirty.

Along with the bluish green and gray exterior color, the 4Runner TRD Pro gets updated wheels. They look very similar to the ones we've come to know and love but with a more angular look, and they're wrapped in Nitto Terra Grappler tires. In addition to the new shoes, the TRD Pros get updated inch Fox internal-bypass shocks and TRD-tuned springs, which give an added inch of lift in the front. Sound familiar? That's because the new Jeep Gladiator Mojave has a similar setup as well as an extra inch of lift up front compared to the Rubicon model.

Additionally, all 4Runners will have standard LED headlights. Limited, blacked-out Nightshade, and TRD Pro models add LED high-beams with standard LED fog lights. And don't forget the Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia TRD Pro models; they also get the Lunar Rock exterior color for the model year, but not the updated suspension setup or the LED lights.

The new trucks should all arrive toward the end of starting at $51, for the 4Runner TRD Pro, $54, for the Tundra TRD Pro, $45, for the Tacoma TRD Pro, and close to $65, for the Sequoia TRD Pro.

Tacoma Wheels on 5th Gen 4Runner

Hey,

Just picked up a new Black 4Runner Limited (Canadian). I'm wondering if anyone has pictures of Tacoma wheels on their 5th Gen 4Runner? I'm looking at picking up a set of 17" wheels to run some beefier tires for winter. I have a new set of /70/17 BFG All-Terrains that just need some wheels.

Cheers,

Here's a pic just after a good wash / wax. Everyone needs to show off their new ride at least once!

Looks good man love the black, but too lazy to keep it clean so I went with the color that looks best dirty!

I'd go with SR5 wheels like many limited owners on here have, or pick up a set of FJ wheels. Those 17" Taco rims look just like the 4th gen rims so I'd personally not go with those, but if you like them the most go for it. Maybe someone can photoshop it for ya.

Congrats on the new ride!

Congrats on your new Limited!
I havn't seen anybody on here with them but Taco wheels willwork as long as they are 17 inch minimum because of our bigger brakes . As will 4th Gen 4Runner wheels and FJ wheels. The 17 inch black steel FJ wheels(steelies) are nice and usually pretty cheap .

I hear ya; I love the look of black, but love that the MGM looks good with dust / dirt on it. I had a Mag Grey Tacoma, but some idiot crashed into me and wrote it off. Bought black because it was the only available (got the dealer to shave a few K off of it, plus the interest rates were much lower).

Thanks Harper; I've just joined this site, but have been browsing solid for close to 2 months researching before I made my purchase. Your truck looks awesome.

I'd love to get a set of 5th gen sr5 wheels, but seems majority of take-off supply is in the USA; shipping to CA is a killer. I have a line on 17" Taco wheels real cheap, but may have to splurge as I think the FJ's would look better.

I have Taco 17" wheels on my 5th Gen 4R with Nitto Grappler tires.

Ride is great and the Nittos eat up the snow. Great snow tires.

Unfortunately I'm out in DC on business and don't have any photos handy.

I'll post some next week when I get home.

Looks great Phil!
I personally love the black on white contrast and making me wish I had bought a BP.

Maybe I'll trade for a BP when they come out with the L v8/6sp in a few years. Who knows if that will ever happen though with fuel prices back on their crazy pendulum swing. They went up 16 cents a gallon here yesterday alone with oil at $90 a barrel!

Thx for the compliment. It's much easier to maintain than one might think. Actually, I think all the 5G colors are nice.

Yeah, in a few years you'll have nothing left to mod, and you'll HAVE to start over.

I may be getting rid of my SR5 wheels. Only have miles on them. Will be doing a wheel and tire swap this week.

Appears so. If you zoom in, you can see a Toyota logo on the hub of the wheel.
