It can be very frustrating when a vehicle won’t start.  There are many different issues that can cause the problem.  This article is written with the assumption that you are looking for a way to get your Ford Edge started now, and is meant to provide you with practical advice to help aid in the diagnosis.

There are really two main ways that a vehicle will not start.  The first and most common is when it won’t turn over.  This just means that the engine doesn’t move when you turn the key.  The second way that your Edge won’t start is when the engine turns when you engage the starter, but it won’t fire and run on its own.  When the engine isn’t turning over at all, that’s a bit easier to diagnose than when it is cranking but not firing.  Just use the jump list below to move to your particular situation.

There can be many reasons why your Edge won’t start.  But, there are less things to troubleshoot than if it were cranking but will not start.  Here are some of the most common issues that cause a vehicle to not crank:

 

1.  Battery Cables

While the battery cables are not necessarily the most likely issue to cause your Edge to not start, they are some of the easiest to diagnose.  You can take a look at the battery poles where the cables connect.  If there appears to be green or white corrosion all around it, cleaning them may help get you back on the road.

2.  Battery Charge

If your battery no longer has enough charge to turn the starter, your Edge will not start.  As a battery ages, it’s “cranking amps” decrease, leaving it with a diminished capacity for starting the vehicle.

When this happens, you’ll often hear the vehicle crank slowly, but not start. 

You can take your battery up to the local parts store, or even Wal-Mart, and have it tested to see if it is still holding a charge.

  • Battery is Dead–  If it’s dead, but charges back up and tests “good”, it would be time to check the battery terminals or have the alternator tested and see if it is properly charging the battery.
  • Battery is Charged–  If the battery is charged, then it would still be advisable to take a look at the battery cables and see if there is an issue with corrosion.  Otherwise, it may be the starter that you need to look at.

A bad alternator can cause your battery to lose enough charge to start your Edge.  It may have had enough energy to get you home, but when you go to start the vehicle, there’s not enough stored energy for the engine to turn over.

 

3.  Starter

The next thing to look at when your Edge isn’t starting would be the starter itself.  When the starter isn’t functioning, it is impossible to start the vehicle (unless it’s a manual, then you can pop start it).  

If you’ve determined that a fully charged battery without corroded cable is the culprit, then it’s time to question whether or not you need a new starter.  When a starter goes bad, they will usually not give you much warning first.  Also, if you are stuck somewhere and are trying to start your Edge, the old beat the starter with a hammer trick is not a wives tale.  It really can get that one last start out of it.

There are a lot of issues that can cause your Edge to crank, but not start.  The engine needs air, fuel, and a spark in order to run.

It is highly likely that if the engine is cranking, but not starting that it has thrown an OBDII code.  It is definitely worth it to use an OBDII scanner to check and see if the engine has thrown any trouble codes.  It is highly likely that if your Edge won’t start that there will be codes.  These codes will tell you what the computer is saying is wrong with your engine.

By looking them up on this site, or just Googling them in general will lead you to a detailed diagnosis of that code.  Hopefully, once the code has been addressed your Edge’s engine will start again.

1.  Fuel Issues

If your Edge isn’t getting enough fuel, or any fuel at all, it may have a bad fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or bad fuel injectors.  Without the proper amount of fuel getting into the combustion chamber, the Edge will crank, but not start.

 

2.  Ignition Issues

One of the biggest issues that causes a vehicle to crank but not start is ignition issues.  When there is no spark, the engine will not start.  You’ll probably have a misfire related code such as P0300, P0301, etc…..

Ignition issues can be caused by many things, including bad spark plugs, bad coil packs, bad plug wires, computer issues, and more.

 

3.  Engine Timing

If the engine’s ability to fire the spark plug at the right time is called “timing”.  If the plugs are firing at the wrong time, or something has happened to cause the camshaft to no longer be in sync with the crankshaft, your Edge won’t start.

There will usually be OBDII codes associated with timing related problems, but not always.  P0013 is a common camshaft position related code.  The crankshaft sensor can go bad as well.  When these sensors go bad, it can be impossible for your Edge to start.

 

4. Security

Most modern vehicles come with smart keys that have electronic protection built in.  This makes it more challenging for thieves to steal them.  There are occasions where this security system will cause the Edge to not start.  You’ll see a security warning when trying to crank the engine though.

 

5.  Other Issues

I just purchased this 2015 Ford Edge sport eco in April 2019 from cowles dealership in woodbridge va. I recently stated issues with the electrical gear system. The vehicle was in park but three vehicle wouldn't start and gave a message that it wasn't on gear. I had bring it back to the dealership and pay for it to get fixed. The dealership mechanic and based on some reviews this is a common issue with this vehicle and other Ford with push start. Is this a recall?.

2 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2008 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/19/2017

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. While driving 25 mph, the wrench icon and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The accelerator pedal failed to work and the vehicle gradually came to a complete stop. The speed on the odometer and the tachometer was incorrect. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off, and turned on the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to normal. The failure recurred and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle automatically restarted and the speed automatically increased from 0 to 70 mph. The contact applied the brakes to reduce the speed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 105,929.

3 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Ford Edge

09/15/2017 driver door ajar came on showing door was open. Closed door several times and it would go off. This happened several times until 10/10/2017. Now it won't go off and my doors wouldn't auto lock when in motion and wouldn't stay locked manually either. My dome ligh would stay on also. 10/16/2017 car would not start, battery was drained and no lights were left on. Called garage and jump started vehicle and took it in for repairs. Just got call that the battery and door ajar sensor will have to be replaced. It will cost almost $800. 00 to fix. The warranty just expired on vehicle and that leaves me with the bill. I read numerous other complaints about the same vehicle and same problem. There should be a recall on this. It is a big safety issue especially when you have children and the doors won't stay locked.

Battery tested fine. When stationary the Ford Edge will not start and all warning signs for the vehicle are on. The radio turns is on and interior lights. Also, while in motion the car it all of sudden stops in the middle of traffic my neighborhood.

5 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Ford Edge

The driver door and rear driver door "door ajar" notification's do not turn off, even when the doors are closed. This causes the dome lights to stay on which drains the battery, and then the vehicle will not start later. This also prevents the doors from locking while driving. This is an ongoing issue and can not seem to be resolved, even after a mechanic cleaned and lubricated the door latches.

The 2 front door switches work sometimes. When parked the car thinks the doors are open and keeps the lights on. Sometimes for no reason the interior lights turn on and it drains the battery. I have been stranded because the lights will just come on when in a store and the battery will drain down to where the car will not start.

Took my vehicle in early for service at sunrise because was concerned about loud screeching noise on brakes and erratic behavior of vehicle -surging. When driving. When the service tech (troy) opened the hood he asked em to get out of the vehicle and stand back, as the top of the battery was spattered with black oil looking material and apparently he and another technician were concerned it might rupture or explode. They asked em to get out of the vehicle, give them the keys and that they would check the vehicle and asked me to wait. About 90 minutes later they came out and said all was fine, nothing wrong with battery or brakes. I left and drove vehicle home and same problems were occuring, I returned and after calling and saying same things were occuring. I had hped to speak to frank wilson, who was an amazing service supervisor, but he was not there and another man who was rude claimed the battery was still under warranty but that it was normal to have oily sludge on the battery . He said it was "normal, because it was just sweating". He resfused to do anything. . Said the brakes needed to be at 3 before Ford would replace them. I asked that he contact Ford corporate and inquire. He said, "no he would not" the battery I should add since I have owned the vehicle has been repeatedly replaced. I have limited driving the vehicle, except for short local trips, and tonight the vehicle would not start and aaa claimed the battery was defective and clearly dead. It is most disturbing when Ford misrepresents their warranty and refused to acknolwedge defects that have been published in their won alerts. Seriously dangerous! there are numerous postings of other Ford Edge owners having these problems. Please investigate their questionable protocols on dangers that are known with their vehicles.

Shut off engine, pulled out the key, while leaving the vehicle the ignition alarm was sounding like the key was still in ignition. Had to reinsert key pull it out and the ignition alarm shut off. The second time the car would not start untill the ignition was jiggled with key in same.

Drivers side door ajar light is on and does not go out even when the door is closed. This causes the doors not to lock causing a safety concern while operating the vehicle. When parked the interior lights remain lit which causes the battery to be drained and the car will not start. I had it fixed at the dealer under warranty just after 1 year of buying the vehicle new, then the 2nd time was 1 year after the replacement switch now not under warranty at this rate I will need to buy one drivers door switch every year at $400 a pop. I also had to replace the battery too. Really!.

Ford Edge 2007-2014: problems, engine options, pros and cons

The Ford Edge is a mid-size, 5-seater crossover SUV. It rides on a car-based platform shared with its luxury twin Lincoln MKX, as well as Mazda CX-9. The Edge offers a solid feel with sporty handling and a smooth ride. The 2011 and newer Ford Edge Sport with a 3.7L V6 is one of the quickest SUVs.

The driver's seat is comfortable and supportive, although the large center console makes the legroom a bit tight. The rear seat space is more than adequate. Rear seatbacks fold down giving the Edge 68.9 cu. ft. of almost flat cargo space.

The 2011 facelift brought a revised front and rear fascia, a much upgraded interior and available MyFord Touch with an 8-inch touchscreen. The 2.0L EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine has been added for 2012, but is only available with front-wheel drive. A used Ford Edge is not very expensive, but is it a good choice? What are the pros and cons and reported problems to watch out for? Problems:Power transfer unit (PTU) failures and leaks have been reported by many owners. The PTU is a compact transfer case in the AWD system. It's attached to the transmission and has a few gears inside to angle the rotating torque towards the rear differential.

The PTU is filled with a small amount of gear oil and is surrounded by hot exhaust parts. The owner's manual for the 2008 Ford Edge specifies the PTU capacity at 12 ounces (0.35L). If not covered by the warranty, replacing the PTU will cost over $1,000, as the OEM part alone is priced over $800 online. Many owners at various forums and on YouTube suggest checking the PTU regularly for leaks and changing the oil in the PTU more often. Signs of a leak from the PTU include thick black fluid drops in the area to the back of the engine in the middle of the car and a bad smell of burnt gear oil coming from under the car. The PTU doesn't have a drain plug, but according to several owners, the gear oil can be sucked out and changed through the fill plug. There are many YouTube videoson this subject.

According to the bulletin 13N02 Ford extended warranty coverage on a brake booster in certain 2010-2013 Ford Edge models to ten years of service or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Check with your Ford dealer if you have any symptoms of a bad brake booster, such as a hard brake pedal or a hissing noise coming from the brake pedal area.

Ford issued the TSB 07-21-11 for the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor or Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor code and/or harsh engagement, no upshift, fifth gear only in the 6F50 transmission of certain 2007-2008 Ford Edge models. The bulletin advises following the diagnostic procedure and if found to be bad, replace the sensor(s). Again, YouTubers made several videoson this problem.

Old spark plugs may cause one of the ignition coils to short, which in turn can cause the PCM to fail. For this reason, it makes sense to replace spark plugs at recommended intervals or earlier. Replacing spark plugs on the V6 Edge will cost from $290 to $420.

The Ford TSB 10-21-02 for the 2009-2011 Edge describes a problem with the transmission range (TR) sensor that can cause various transmission problems, such as slipping/neutral out, 5th gear start from stop, electronic PRNDL error, backup camera on in Drive or speed control dropping out intermittently.

The transmission range sensor tells the transmission computer what gear the shifter is in. For example, the backup camera may not work intermittently if the sensor cannot detect that the transmission is in Reverse. The diagnostic procedure in the bulletin involves checking the resistance between the transmission connector pins and if the resistance is out of specs, the transmission range sensor must be replaced.

The TSB 18-2013 covers the issue of the door ajar lamp illuminated with all doors closed, draining the battery in the 2011-2013 Ford Edge. A door ajar sensor that is built into the door latch might be the cause of the problem. The TSB repair procedure involves cleaning the switch using a special tool that most likely only Ford dealers have.

It's not a very expensive repair, however there are a few reports that the problem came back after the repair. There are plenty of YouTube videosdescribing the problem and repair options. This threadat Fordedgeforum.com discusses the issue. Some owners suggest cleaning and lubricating the latch with a spray. One of our friends had this issue with his 2012 Edge and he replaced the driver's door latch ($130 part) that was faulty himself. A dealer may charge $400-$500 for the replacement.
Ford has issued several recalls for the Edge; check on the NHTSA website.

V6 Engine choices: The 2007-2010 Edge comes with a 265-hp 3.5L Duratec 35 V6. For 2011, the 3.5L V6 gained more power (285 horsepower). The 2011-2014 Ford Edge Sport is powered by the 305-hp 3.7L Duratec 37 V6. Both are solid DOHC engines used in many Ford and Lincoln vehicles as well as in some Mazda products.

EcoBoost 2.0L: For 2012, the Edge received an optional fuel-efficient 240-hp 2.0L EcoBoost engine with front-wheel drive. It's a gasoline turbocharged direct-injected (GTDI) 4-cylinder motor. You can find it not only in many Ford vehicles but even in some Volvo and Range Rover products. As with any turbo engine, it needs to be maintained well to last.

Timing belt or timing chain?The 3.5L and 3.7L V6s, as well as the 2.0L EcoBoost have a timing chain. A timing chain doesn't need to be replaced unless it's stretched or there is some other problem with it.

Fuel Economy: The 2012-2014 FWD Edge with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine is the most fuel efficient trim level; the EPA rates it at 21/29 mpg. The 2011-2014 AWD Ford Edge with a 3.5L V6 gets 18/25 mpgcity/highway, giving it a range of up to 437 miles (703 km) on a tank of gas. The 2011-2014 AWD Ford Edge Sport with a 3.7L V6 is rated at 17/23 mpg.

Pros:Stylish sporty looks, fun to drive, reasonable price, strong engine, cargo space, smooth ride.

Cons:Thirsty, expensive to keep at higher mileage, restricted visibility in the corners, a large center console takes away driver's space, electrical and PTU issues, MyFord Touch bugs, 22-inch tires in the Ford Edge Sport are expensive to replace.

Overall:The Edge is one of the few SUVs that you can enjoy driving, although it's not the most reliable choice. As of September 2021, Consumer Reports rates only the 2010 and 2014 Edge 'above average' for reliability; other years of this generation are rated 'average' or 'below average'. Some of the problems might be costly to repair at higher mileage. We also checked the NHTSA website and there is a spike in complaints about electrical problems in the 2011-2013 Edge. Still, a great deal of Ford Edge owner reviews online are positive. Many owners compliment the styling, driving experience, power, MyFord Touch features and safety. Overall, a front-wheel drive Edge will be less expensive to maintain in the long run.

The V6 engine is designed so that the water pump is built inside and is driven by a timing chain. If a water pump fails, it's expensive to replace and the coolant might leak into the crankcase. That said, we have seen a V6 engine last for over 200K miles and the number of engine-related complaints is small compared to other cars. Considering that and other issues, when buying a used Ford Edge, a good extended warranty at least for the powertrain is worth considering. Crash test ratings are mixed. Check on the NHTSA website.

How does the Edge AWD system work?All-wheel drive is available only with a V6. It's an on-demand AWD system based on front-wheel drive, which means front wheels are powered at all times. An electronically controlled clutch located in the rear differential engages the rear axle when needed. We didn't try off-roading, but with good winter tires the system works well in the snow. One of the main components of the AWD system is a small transfer case (power transfer unit or PTU), which is attached to the transmission. As with any AWD system, it's important to use only tires of the same size, keep the pressure up to the specs and rotate the tires often to make sure they are wearing evenly. The oil in the rear differential and transfer unit must be kept clean.

What to look for when buying a used Ford Edge:When checking the vehicle at the dealership lot, test all electrical accessories, such as the power tailgate and the air conditioner. Make sure the sunroof opens and closes freely. See if the backup camera (if equipped) works consistently. Earlier, there were many issues with the MyFord Touch system, including the black screen, slow response, freezing, and requiring repeated reboots. Many owners have had the software updated or the APIM module replaced while under warranty. This means, research the MyFord Touch problems and test all the features carefully. When bringing your vehicle for service, ask to check the A/C drain; if it's clogged up, water will leak from the HVAC system inside the car. A timely spark plug replacement will help avoid more serious problems like failed ignition coils. Consider rust proofing if you live in an area where salt is used on the roads in winter.
