If it’s been more than 30 days since you last certified for benefits, your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim will become inactive. To continue receiving benefits, you must reopen your claim.

You can reopen your claim if it was filed within the last 52 weeks and you have not used all of your benefits. If your benefit year has ended, you may need to reapply for unemployment. Visit Benefit Year End for more information.

How to Reopen a Claim

Online

UI OnlineSM is the fastest and most convenient way to reopen your claim. You can reopen your claim any time following the steps below:

Step 1: Access your UI Online account.

Log in to Benefit Programs Online and select UI Online.

Step 2: Select Reopen Your Claim.

Select Reopen Your Claim from the Notifications section of your UI Online homepage. This link will only appear if you need to reopen your claim.

Note: If you don’t see Reopen Your Claim, you may have older certifications that you need to complete before you can certify for new weeks. Select Certify for Benefits to complete the certifications. Report your work and earnings for any past weeks you worked. Answer all questions and submit your answers. Once your request has been submitted, a Confirmation page will appear. Print or save a copy for your records.

Step 3: Check your status.

Access your UI Online homepage to check the status of your request. If you successfully reopened your claim, we will let you know when to certify for benefits. If we need more information, we will schedule a phone interview with you. Your interview date and time will be sent by mail and will also appear in the Notifications section of your UI Online homepage. It may take up to 10 days to reopen your claim if we need to review it.

After You Reopen Your Claim

You will receive important information about your claim by mail. Be sure to read and respond to all requests to avoid payment delays.

Certify for Benefits Every Two Weeks

You must certify for benefits every two weeks. Certifying is the process of answering basic questions every two weeks that tells us you’re still unemployed and eligible to continue receiving benefit payments.

Important: If you have opted out of receiving the paper Continued Claim Form (DE 4581), you will not receive a paper form in the mail. Instead, you will receive an email notification when it’s time to submit your certifications through UI Online.

Is your account frozen for two weeks, and you can’t re-certify? And you are reading all the internet rumors that it is a glitch. Suppose you call EDD after receiving the “Reopen your claim” glitch two weeks ago. Someone confirms it is a glitch. However, they might help to reopen your weeks available for certification. If you accidentally reopened your claim, please call them ASAP.

Does that the “Reopen Your Claim EDD” button a problem with the unemployment claim?

If you have an open claim but the button to reopen appears to work ineffective after you have completed the process of reopening. Still, it seems every week after that. If this is the case, you’re likely having an issue with the “Reopen Your Claim” glitch. Contacting EDD might be the only option to get it fixed. I tried the Contact Form available on the UI Online web portal. However, I haven’t been able to get a reply for two weeks.

I’m waiting on them currently! 1-833-978-2511 and then choices 1, 2. (2 and 4), and 4 – you’ll have to listen to two or four lengthy messages before you are in a position to select your options. If you can get a “Thank you “Thank You” message, you’re not part of the queue, and you’ll have to disconnect and attempt again. It took me four attempts, and I’ve been waiting for about 30 minutes, but it’s worth the wait to resolve the glitch.

Update: A beneficial and cheerful EDD employee returned my call. After about an hour of waiting, they acknowledged that the problem in my EDD account was known as the “Reopen Glitch” and fixed it in time for me to start certification right away. He also helped me certify that the entire time I could not be approved due to the glitch. The checks arrived on the following day!

I’ve seen many tweets where people state that they have fixed the issue and were able to get a certificate through UI Online just because they disclosed their problem to an EDD representative. If you’re not sure what to tell the rep, let them know that you’re using an unusual Reopen button that’s not present, and the issue is going to be solved! Be aware that it could take a while to find an EDD representative to call! Therefore, be patient, and you’ll be able to get what you would like! the button to Reopen Your Claim is an error, and you shouldn’t click it even if you have already clicked on the button, don’t be concerned since you can fix it by calling EDD representatives.

How Do I Know if My Claim is Approved and How Much I’ll Receive?

If you’ve chosen for electronic delivery of information, ensure you check your email or mailbox regularly. Make sure you read the documents you receive attentively and save them for later reference. You can access a lot of this information on www.nhes.nh.gov.

In the beginning, you’ll be sent a new Claim Instructions Sheet. It will be delivered via mail within a couple of days following the time you submit your application. Be sure to follow instructions in the Second Step instructions. You will need to file a Continued Claim every week. That differs in comparison to the form you fill out. The Continued Claim will keep your benefits going from week to week. You could also get an Eligibility Notice.

The ability to answer these questions fast and accurately will assist in processing your claim efficiently. After that, you’ll be provided with an Unemployment Compensation Determination. The document will be written: This isn’t a guarantee of payment. It’s a notification of the amount you are entitled to each week under the wage that your employers have reported to you in recent weeks. The Determination of Unemployment Compensation is a document that deals with money. These documents are official communication that relates to actual dollars. Non-monetary documents are official documents related to the reason for your resignation from work, such as severance or vacation payment due towards you. It also reveals your ability to start work immediately and the effort you’ve put into locating a new job.

In essence, you’ll receive two types of documents, both money, and non-money. Money documents will say that this isn’t the guarantee of the payment. Non-monetary documents will read this notice will determine the eligibility to receive unemployment benefits.

The non-monetary documents will provide an outline of the specific problem that the document addresses. If all eligibility conditions are met, the payment for the weeks that are clad is made. A separate document is created for each eligibility requirement. Although you might be qualified based on one form of documentation, you could be disqualified for another. All qualifications must be fulfilled to be eligible for payment. If you’re denied benefits, the notice will indicate the weeks or days you aren’t qualified. It’s crucial to read every document attentively.

Says "reopen claim" or "file new claim" when I already filed

Situation: You keep checking the UI portal to see if your claim has been processed or updated, it is showing NO updates and now you notice that you have the option to file a new claim. Previously it said  “processing” when you tried to click the file new claim button.

Do not reopen your claim! Especially if you got a confirmation number -- it's processing. EDD is a crazy system that just doesn't like things if it's not a certain way so don't add to the problem and cause potential delay. It's not a big issue, but avoid re-filing if you see the glitch. It’s very tempting to file another claim, while you anxiously wait for a determination from EDD.

Wait a few days... keep checking back. It's better to wait one week. Don't worry -- you won't miss out on a certification. You have at least 2 weeks from the Sunday it asked you to certify to complete certification.

Did you already reopen your claim? You are probably fine, but know that you are not the only one who it happens to. Better to leave it alone only because as you know, their systems are so old and don't like anything that is slightly off. Better safe than sorry.

Instead, give your claim two to three weeks processing time from the time you first filed.If it STILL says reopen/refile, then unfortunately you do have to contact EDD and get that fixed. It's something more than just a glitch at this point. If you speak to a claims specialist they are often able to file the claim for you over the phone or push through your existing application and more than likely be able to backdate it to the date you filed as well.Phone tips are here.

For those of you who in CA and have the "reopen claim" option do NOT reopen your claim. There is a glitch in the system. It should fix itself in the next couple updates.


I just called EDD 15 minutes ago and the representative fixed it manually and was able to certified my last 2weeks.


I do have a question that I forgot to ask the EDD representative. My claim balance is $1230 after I just certified my last 2 weeks. Since my original benefit year was from 3/15/2020 to 12/31/2020 and now it got extended to 3/15/202 to 4/10/2021 which I assume from the latest bill that got passed do I get extra balance from it also? What will happen when my claim balance of $1230 runs out? It will run out way before 4/10/2021 when my benefit year ends.


I would assume if they added 4 more months to my benefit year shouldn't they also add 4 months of claim balance also? Will I get more claim balance added after my regular balance is exhausted?

I don't see why more money shouldn't be added to last the next 4 mos too.

BTW, it's a tad after 5p & I'm on hold here & should hopefully get someone!!! I'll try to ask them your question too, which is also MY question too because I'll have even less of a balance than you once I certify for these last 2 wks.

Hmm, it said 21 min wait & yet I'm still on hold for 50 min & it's 5:45 PM PST. Anyone know what time they close? Are there extended call center hours these days? They haven't packed up & gone home, have they & I'm still on hold?!

I hung up. I know what happened here. I last called a few min BEFORE they probably closed for the night & so the phone system still has me on hold & will all night if I never hang up.

Isn't 1 - 866 - 333 - 4606 a 24-hr # that could help me?

Good news everyone!

I called yesterday and they fixed the reopen claim for me manually just like everyone else who called. I was able to certify my last 2 weeks and got paid this morning and the extra $300 also. Hang in tight, the glitch will be fixed very soon. If you don't want to wait, you can call and they will fix it for you but it's difficult to get thru.
